There are many magnificent parks and gardens in Dublin. They range from the grand Phoenix Park on the north side of the Liffey River to St Stephen's Green in the centre of Dublin to Marlay Park on the south of the river.

Phoenix Park

Phoenix Park is the largest public park in Europe and the best known park in Ireland It covers 1,760 acres. It is enclosed in a 8 mile long stone wall. Old fashioned street lamps line Chesterfield Avenue which runs north to south through the park.

The park includes a number of buildings, the most important is Aras an Uachtarain. Aras an Uachtarain as a private house was built in 1751 and later became the house of the President of Ireland when Dr Douglas Hyde moved there in 1938. Other buildings are the houses of the Pope's ambassador and the American ambassador; St Mary's Hospital with chapel by Thomas Cooley of 1771; the Magazine Fort of 1734. There is also the people's gardens by the main entrance on Parkgate Street on the southside of Phoenix Park and Dublin Zoo. Farmleigh house is located on the northside of the park.

Phoenix park was laid out in the mid 18th Century and was the scene of the Phoenix Park murders in 1882, when the Chief Secretary and Under-Secretary for Ireland were assassinated.

Zoological Gardens - Dublin Zoo

Dublin Zoo, the Zoological Gardens are located inside Phoenix Park. The zoo has attractive gardens encircling two natural lakes where pelicans, flamingos, ducks and geese abound.

National Botanic Gardens

The National Botanic Gardens in Ireland are located in Glasnevin, Dublin. It provides 50 acres of magnificent gardens with a fabulous collection of plants, shrubs and trees; established in 1790. Many of the plants come from tropical Africa and South America.

St Stephen's Green

St Stephen's Green is located in the heart of Dublin City on the south side of the Liffey River. St Stephen's Green was originally an open common, enclosed in 1663. The earliest as well as the largest of Dublin's squares, it is encircled by magnificent 18th century and 19th century buildings Stephen's Green Park was opened to the general public in 1877.

Notable buildings around St Stephen's Green include:

No 85 by Richard Castle in 1739; No 86 by Robert West in 1765; on the west side Numbers 119-20 by Richard Castle and the Royal College of Surgeons in 1806.

* Stephen's Green shopping centre is located on the north west of the park

St Anne's Park

St Anne's Park in Dublin is located to the north east Dollymount. St Anne's Park is a large park covering over 270 acres and wooded with evergreen, oak, pine, beech, chestnut and lime. There is a lovely rose garden, opened in 1975.

Marley Park

Marley Park is situated in Rathfarnham. This is a large park and contains areas of woodland, a large pond, nature trails and a model railway. The start of the Wicklow walkway is located at the park.

Bush Park

Bushy Park is located on the south side of Dublin near Terenure. This is a large park and contains a large pond, lots of paths for walks and green open spaces where sports is played. ON the south side of Bushy Park is located the River Dodder.
