Entertainment Tonight - David Arquette

February 7th, 2000

Julie Moran had a 'Scream' of an interview with David Arquette as he shared details of life with a special "Friend," Courteney Cox.

Julie Moran: Is it going to be sad to say good-bye to Dewey forever?
David Arquette: Yeah, a little bit.  I had a lot of fun and, obviously, I met my beautiful wife.  I had the opportunity to work on three very successful films that helped my career a lot.  He's a fun character and people seem to enjoy him, so that will be sad.  I'm glad that we're going out with a plan and that it's not just going to go on forever.  It's a trilogy.

Julie: There's closure.
David: Exactly.

Julie: What was the mood like on the set since you guys did know that this was going to be the last one?
David: It was fun.  All the sets have pretty much been light-hearted.  There are some scenes where you have to get serious and psyche yourself up and be scared.  But for the most part it's just a really light-hearted, fun set.  There are a lot of laughs and Wes [Craven, the director] is just such a calming person who just says it how it is.  It's not a big deal, you just have a lot of fun.  We all love working with each other.  They always get such great cast members, so it's just like a fun party.

Julie: Is it hard to keep the secret?
David: Not that much.  I don't like people to ruin movies for me, so it's easy for me just to say, "Ah, I can't ruin it for you.  You have to see it."  If somebody says, "No, I never wathc those kind of movies," then I might tell them.

Julie: This really has to be special because you met Courteney on the first one, and you were married by the third one.
David: Yeah, right before the third one.  We got back from our honeymoon and started the third one.

Julie: Now tell me about this honeymoon.  You toured American roller-coaster parks?
David: Well, first we went to a tennis camp with the family right after the wedding.  Then we went to the Caribbean for the beach and relaxation.  Then right at the tail end we went to Busch Gardens, Disneyworld and Islands of Adventure - the Universal theme park, and we rode all these amazing roller-coasters.

Julie: Whose idea was that?
David: We both like roller-coasters a lot, but by the third park we were like, "Okay, I can't go on another roller-coaster."  We were like getting motion sickness walking down the hall.

Julie: Do you share a trailer on the set or do you have separate trailers?
David: We share a trailer.  Yeah, we combine our trailers so we get an upgrade.  We get a big one.  It's funny -- she's always like, "It's too cold in here."  So she turns off the air-conditioner.  Then when she's not looking, I'll put it up a few notches.  [laughs]  But it's great.

Julie: A lot of couples don't like to work together, but you guys really seem to enjoy it.
David: Different strokes for different folks, but we really enjoy it.  I find it fascinating just to watch her work and to see her talent.  She makes me laugh so much and we enjoy each others company so much.  It's neat to watch her talent -- to watch it blossom.

Julie: There are a couple of scenes, in this movie in particular, where you guys are just at each others throats.  Is that hard to do?  Fun to do?
David: It's kind of easy to do -- what comes naturally.

Julie: You guys are really terrific together on screen.  I really like the inscription you put on the wedding ring.
David: "A deal is a deal."

Julie: Where did that come from?
David: That came from Courteney's best friend Teresa.  Her father had been married for years, and he had a loving relationship for 40-plus years, and he said to Teresa, "When you go out to see David and Courteney, tell 'em a deal is a deal."  That touched us so much that we wrote it down.  It is a deal.  You say certain things -- you have to go through the hard times and the good times and work out all your issues, learning to communicate and to love each other.

Julie: I've been married for 13 years!  Do you foresee a 'Scream' reunion in 10, 20, 30 years?  Or do you think this is completely it?
David: Maybe on a cheesy talk-show.  "You can visit Dewey at www.deweyriley.com.  I still got my old mustache there at e-bay!" [Both laugh]

Julie: When people walk out of this movie, what do you want them to leave the theater with?
David: Just feeling entertained and having fun, being scared.  We watched it with one other couple, and we were being critical of it, but the best aspect of this movie is watching it with an audience -- a rowdy audience.  Having people screaming, yelling, laughing and throwing jokes at the screen is just the best.

Julie: That's how the screening was that I saw.  It was a big theater, full of people.  People were hootin' and hollerin', screaming and yelling.  It was like a roller-coaster.
David: We went to Mann's Chinese Theater for one screening of 'Scream 2,' and it was out of control.  People were nuts -- saying funny things.  I've always felt that the audience is part of the movie.

Julie: Do you and Courteney want to have kids?
David: We certainly do.  Not right now.  She's not pregnant or anything.  We're planning on it pretty soon.  We can't wait.  We're gonna have so much fun.  We love our dog so much, so we can only imagine how much we'll love our kids.
