Research Link costs about 10p for each page you view of an image of the actual
GRO indexes. The indexes from 1837 to 2001 are available.

This index is also known as 'St Catherine's Index' , this is a list of all the registered ' Birth's , Marriages & and Deaths , from 1837 ,3rd qtr , up to about 1980, in England & Wales.
The majority are of Births and Marriages are on film up to the early 1900's and the Deaths are on microfiche.
Microfiche are slowly replacing worn out and damaged films.
The layout is similar in all cases
Surname , Christian name, Registration District , Volume No , page No ,
You must also add the Quarter (i.e. March or 1st Quarter) and Year, is you are applying for the certificate.
In later years of the 1900.s , more information is added to the Births ( Mothers maiden name) and in the case of Marriages , the spouses name.
You can apply for a certificate from various sources :
From your own country with Agents who specialize in obtaining them.
From the Government site Office of National Statistics or Family Records Centre
From a English Agent i.e. S&D Services
From the local Register Office , try Genuki , to be able to locate the offices.
Although it pays to check whether the Local Office excepts the Civil Index reference .
The Bristol Office at Quakers Friars , does not recognize the civil index reference , so will require exact date and place of event. Also some records were destroyed during the 2nd World War.
Most of these lists can be obtained through your local F.H.C (LDS/Mormons) , even abroad.
