Researching From Abroad
I can appreciate the frustration in having to research from abroad, having helped many people. I think sometimes, researchers over here do not appreciate we can some times just 'pop' into the Records Offices. In the following , I have tried to give a brief guide and will enlarge with more information , as I go along.
However the Internet has now opened the possibilities of getting more information. There are now more records being made available on line and there is still a lot of help available.
I am amazed at the sites I find , there are a lot of people doing really hard work on their sites to the benefit of all of us. Also don't forget the 1881 census CD's by The LDS , big boon to us all and a bargain price for the information they contain and now on line for England and Wales.
I am still trawling the web to find on-line information relating to Bristol and area , I will always update as I find.
It is always , as some one who does 'Look Up's ' , a quandary into how much help you should give , as when researching your ancestor , it's the finding of them yourself, that gives the excitement, but it can help a great deal to have someone trace parts of the Links.
These are major sources of information. they are cheap to join and , most, send out magazines with loads of information about the area you are interested in. Also do not forget your own Local Society, some , even the smallest, have good information about the UK.
There is an abundance of sites available on the net , see list, and most will give you a guide to starting, and as you continue your line , there are specialist sites re occupations & lifestyles etc.
Record Offices
They , again, are a source of much information. Most will have a research service, usually chargeable.
Mailing lists are an ideal place to collect information, not only can you 'post' your own query but you can gain knowledge by the other peoples questions and the answers they receive.
If you get stuck, then this is another approach. Their costs can vary considerably, there are some very good ones out there. I would suggest , if you wish to use one, try to get just a small bit of research done, and then by their replies , you can tell the type of service they will give. Also try ones from Genealogy Magazines.
Masses of books and magazines available , the Eve McLaughlin guides , are very good and very reasonable and written by a leading authority in Genealogy. The 'Family Tree ' & 'Practical Family History' magazines are very good, with some interesting articles and information.
The Web in General
The web has opened up the world to everyone, I now 'chat' to people form everywhere and I am still amazed at all the work that people have put into their web sites, a small note in peoples Guest books is always appreciated. Searching for something on the web can be a trial , but now there are Search engines especially for Genealogy.
Well I hope that's helped a bit, I would be pleased from anybody, who had any suggestions how ,we can make your researching easier.
