History

Airforce awarded concept definition contracts to 7 aircraft manufactures for the ATF (Advanced Tactical Fighter) in September, 1993. In October 1986, a Lockheed/Boeing/General Dynamics team and Northhrop/McDonnell Douglas team were selected to compete  by building each 2 prototypes - YF22A and YF-23 respectively.

In April, 1991, the airforce announced that the F-22/Pratt and Whittney F119 combination was the winner of the ATF competion.

Future

Originally 750 F-22's were planned. This has been reduced to approximately 350.
