Geography

The continent of Sapience
Sapience is the main continent of Aetolia, and is where
all Aetolians begin their lives. It contains many cities,
villages, and adventuring areas, set up in a coherent manner.

Ashtan, Bastion of the North
Ashtan, Bastion of the North, lies on the northwest shore of the inhabited part
of the continent of Sapience. Possessing a port into the Sapphire Ocean, and
near to the great, fertile Mamashi grasslands, Ashtan has along with Shallam
dominated the northern part of the continent since the earliest days of the
Midnight Age.

Merchants flock the Central Market, the center of Ashtanite commerce, and the
Seaside Markets, where citizens may browse the various shops that were
originally set up for the crews of the ships docked nearby. Scholars may feel
drawn more toward Philosopher's Plaza, where they may debate upon the nature of
the universe. Warriors may feel inclined to visit the many armories stores that
line the famed market, testing out the tools they come across.

The citizenry of Ashtan has long stood for the principles of freedom, yet that
freedom has not come cheaply. Many lives have paved the way for this luxury.
Ashtanites have been known to go to great lengths to defend their city and the
freedoms within.

People from all walks of life are welcome to make their home in Ashtan, or to
simply drop by for a visit and browse the many wares. Ashtan's council is known
for strict enforcement of their laws, and will not accept ignorance as an
excuse. The laws are written in a journal at the city gates for all to view.

Shallam, Jewel of the East
Shallam, the Jewel of the East, is, along with Ashtan, one of the two largest
cities on the continent.

Shallam is notable for its architecture, particularly its gilded domes, which
catch and reflect light for miles around, giving the city a glowing
appearance at sunset or under moonlight.

It is the home of the Priests and Paladins, the healers and crusaders of
Aetolia. Shallam is also the home of the guild of magic weavers known as
the Magi, who bend the energy of the arcane to do their bidding. Sentaari,
a guild of benevolent monks also call Shallam their home and use their
mastery over the body to defend her walls.

Shallamese citizens may sometimes be found defending the villagers in nearby
Jaru, and Shastaan from the frequent attacks on them by others who may do
them harm.

The Ithmian Forests
The Ithmian forests consist of two forests: The Western Ithmia and the
Northern Ithmia. Seperated by the north-south flowing Zaphar river, they are
very different places.

The Western Ithmia is a classic oak and elm temperate forest. It is said that
Dryads may be found in the forest, though they can be quite difficult to
catch.

The Northern Ithmia is a much darker, forbidding place than the Western
Ithmia. The mischevious Buckawns, mortal enemies of the Dryads, make their
home here, and deep within the heart of the forest is the ruins of Hashan.

The Liruma Scrublands
The scrubland of Liruma was once a bright and thriving savannah. It has since
been torn by conflict and reduced to a struggling wasteland of scattered trees
and jutting stones. The animals of the savannah have fought hard for their
survival, and have grown strong in the harsh terrain of their new home. Deep
within the Liruma sits the village of Mitrine, where the tribal hunters of the
same name live their lives.

The Dakhota Hills
The Dakhota hills are a range of hills bounded by the Mhojave desert to the
southeast, the Savannah to the north and northeast, and the mighty Vashnar
mountains to the west. It is a relatively unpopulated and wild place, and
wolves roam it seeking their prey. It is also known that the Azdun dungeon is
located somewhere within it.

The Mhojave Desert
The desert is one of the loneliest places in Aetolia. Inhabited mainly by
creatures such as lizards and hyenas, it is not a place to linger in, though
some of the Shadowsnakes have been known to enjoy basking in the sun there,
and of course the famous and intoxicating cactus weed grows only in the desert.

Moghedu, racial home of the Mhun
The entrance to Moghedu is located in the southern Vashnar Mountains, at the
southwestern edge of the Mhojave desert. It is said that there are many
descending levels to Moghedu, and that it is quite populated, though this is
difficult to ascertain as the Mhun of Moghedu do not welcome strangers with
open arms. Still, it is not a place of overt danger to the traveller, as the
Mhun, while not necessarily friendly, are not hostile either.

The Pash Valley
The Pash Valley, created by the Shamtota hills to the West and the Putoran
hills to the east is the breadbasket of Shallam, Jaru, and Torston. A warm,
lush place that is fed by the waters of the Pachacacha river, which runs
through it, it is also a favoured grazing spot for antelopes and the cheetah
that prey upon them.

At the south end of the valley lie the shining city of Shallam and its sister
village of Jaru, while at the north end is the village of Torston.

The Shamtota Hills
The Shamtota hills are a range of southern, weathered hills. Vegetation in
them ranges from oak groves to the olive and orange groves planted by farmers
living in the region. Oftentimes, you will hear the cry of a bald eagle
circling overhead.

The Aalen forest, racial home of the Tsol'aa
The Aalen forest lies west of the Vashnar range, which accounts for its
relative privacy, given that the cities of the Sapience continent lie on the
eastern and northern side of the Vashnar range.

It is a very old redwood forest, containing, along with a wide variety of
animals (bears, rabbits, deer, and so on), the racial home of the Tsol'aa.
