Work continues on the car.  Dad has had the engine apart and by hand cranking the engine round could tell that one of the cylinders was flat.  He took the shim from one of the inlet valves on that cylinder and ground it down slightly, and the cylinder is now OK.  I'm waiting on a set of 'O' rings from Phillip McCallan's in Lurgan for the pilot screws on the carbs so they can be re-assembled and we can try the whole thing out.
The seatbelt issue seems to be sorted.  I bolted a steel plate into the footwell and bolted onto that the eyelet for my crutch strap which I ordered from Demon Tweeks (10 quid each inc P&P - not too bad I thought).  The same has been done to the passenger side as well.

The effect when sitting in the car is to be clamped absolutely to the seat.  You cannot and will not move at all.  Mind you it was like that before the crutch strap was fitted in my opinion.  It's a good job, and I can understand it's necessity in motorsport, but it does seem a bit excessive for nipping down to the shops for a pint of milk!  Fingers crossed it keeps the SVA man happy.
I haven't re-booked the SVA yet - Newtownards are on strike and I wanted to wait until I was sure the emmisions thing was sorted out.  Hopefully I'll get taking Lucy into Quinn's garage again early next week and we'll check the emmissions.  Again.

Ah well!!  If it was easy, sure everyone would have one!  The car failed the SVA again yesterday, this time however there are only 2 issues left.  First off is the emmisions.  I spent Wednesday morning in a garage with an emmisions tester trying to adjust the carbs to no avail.  I was reasonably sure running the engine with it's original jets and air filter along with tightening up the exhaust would solve the problem.  Unfortunately it didn't.  I don't think there can be many more depressing experiences than going for an SVA you know you'll fail!  I think the next step on this is to have the engine pulled apart and see if we can find out why it idles roughly.  The other fail is the seatbelts - and their lap belt postition.  These are a standard item and why he has failed them I don't know.  There have been literally dozens of MK Indy's with Cobra Seven seats, with four point harnesses bolted in the standard place that have passed SVA in England - when I asked the tester about this he just said they don't test them correctly in Engalnd!  Ah well, I think the answer to this is to re-fit the Sabelt harnesses and fit a crotch strap - this should pull the lapbelts into position.

I have to admit I don't really want to see the car for a couple of days - I need a break from the thing.  Still at least I have a pretty good idea what I need to do to get her passed.

Co-incidentally my advice to anyone building a kit car in N. Ireland?  Go get it tested in England.  Seriously.

Well I've got some great pics from yesterday's TVR trackday.  As well as the obligatory range of great looking TVR's (those big V8's do sound great I must admit), there were a few kit cars, single seaters, and some historic cars - including a 1936 Austin 7 Special, and a 1969 Crossle.  Anyhow onto the pictures.

All the usual suspects were there, Sean, Brian and Les in his lovely red Vauxhall powered Ginetta.

This lovely old Austin 7 Special was powered by a 750cc supercharged engine.  It was first built in 1936, it was her first run out after a restoration project and after a little adjustment of the plugs leads she ran well - and very loudly!

5 lovely looking TVRs there, and one that I'm not quite sure what it was - I'm calling it an unidentified flying object!

The centre car is a historic Crossle Formula Ford - it's 35 odd years old - and it looks like it's just been build - really beautiful!

Some other cars including a new Nissan 350Z (quick in a straight line), and older TVR and Richard Key's Locost 'Blade.

Just some assorted pics of yours truely.

Some other shots from the day.  Yet again many many thanks to Richard Crowe who took most of these pics.  He's also got a fair bit of video footage which he's going to edit down to a few downloadable clips.

From a personal point of view the day went OK - there were a couple of small problems - the interior mirror became detached going down one of the straights, I managed to run out of petrol at one point towards the end (talk about embarrassing!), and the rain soaked the track nicely to 'slippery as ice' a couple of times, but I did get a few laps with a trained instructor who was complimentary about my lines, and I continued to improve and was able to reel in a few quickish cars towards the end.  Getting another car in your sights and trying to bring him in closer is very enjoyable, although it's plainly obvious the car can handle a lot more speed through the corners (especially debtors) than I have the cocojones to give her!
