UNLUCKY DEFEAT AGAINST TABLE TOPPERS

EDGECUMBE 3-2 ALTARNUN
Altarnun deserved to gain a point as these two free scoring sides met at Fisguard Field, Torpoint with 149 goals being scored between them an Edgecumbe this season.
Right from the kick-off home winger Chris Staniforth picked the ball up in midfield and lashed a shot into the net to give Edgecumbe the lead on 34 seconds, this was doubled when Andy Humphries fed Mathew Williams and his cross was turned in at the far post by Graham O'Neill. Altarnun came back into it, and midway through the half while home goalkeeper Mike Tamblin was organizing his wall, Steve Jasper stepped up and lobbed him from 20 yards. It got worse for Tamblin six minutes later when rushing out from his goal he missed his clearance and Jason Phillips rolled his shot into an empty net to make it 2-2 at halftime.
Into the second half, Edgecumbe continued to press but the Altarnun defence held firm excellently marshaled by the stand-in keeper Ashley Bowen who had replaced the injured Gary Colwill in the first period and indeed Altarnun should have taken the lead when Neil Tryner jinked past two defenders only to see his shot cleared off the line by Richard Washburn. Edgecumbe continued to pile on the pressure but when Staniforth hit the post with four minutes left it looked like it wouldn't be their day. All that changed in the 89th minute when man of the match Humphries sent over a superb cross and O'Neill climbed highest to head in from six yards, giving Edgecumbe the win and keeping their Division One championship ambitions alive.
