Amit Prabhakar Department of Mechanical Engineering IIT Two phase flows are very common
in sewage flows, flow of evaporating chemicals in industrial plants and in refrigerating
systems. The phenomena of hydraulic jump might occur in these pipes and
consequently the flow of vapor might be obstructed by the liquid, fully or
partially. This in turn might produce a very complex flow like a pulsating flow
or a bubble flow which is a very complex phenomenon. If the pipes are not designed
properly, this may damage the piping system. The situation becomes more
sophisticated when pipe has a sudden expansion or contraction.
My research is about to
determine or predict the height of the hydraulic jumps for given initial flow
rates of both the phases and height of the liquid layer. This includes investigation
in both the constant, square cross section channel, which has been reported
quite frequently in fluid mechanics literature, as well as suddenly expanding, rectangular
cross section channel which is yet to be present in the literature in a
reasonable amount. As indicated above, control of H2 is crucial for smooth operation of the flow system. |
