Standards Converter

BBC C06/509 Digital 625 to 405 line Standards Converter (1970s)

The old 405 line TV sets run on a totally different standard to today's sets. In order to get the old sets working a standards converter is used. The standards converter changes the signal into a form which is suitable for the old TV sets. The good thing about a standards converter is that the old sets can be run without the need for any modification. Only one converter is needed per collection, so the market for them is small.

Standards converters are very complicated and the parts used in them are expensive. Several people have tried to market standards converters, but the high cost prevents people from buying them.

Daryl Hock is curently selling his 'Aurora' converter for $290, it is excellent and really good value for money.

Due to my interest in modern electronics I have been designing my own converter. I probably won't ever sell it, but if I am happy I may publish the design. In a change to the original idea my converter now uses programmable PIC microcontrollers, these are easy to program at home.

Progress so far. I originally started this project a few years ago when I did my HNC, but have only recently got something that works. Back in May I was finally available to get pictures although not very reliably. There is still alot of work needed to get it right.
