Boehlkea fredcochui, Gery, 1966

Origin:Peru, Leticia, Rio Maranon.

Etymology: Named in honour of Fred Cochu.

Synonyms: Microbrycon cochui

First European import: Unknown. First American import: 1956 by F. Cochu.

Care: Boehlkea fredcochui should be kept in larger tanks with a lot of free swimming space. Densely planted zones, a dark soil, tempered light and peat filtration will provide the fish with a natural surrounding, in which the fish will show it's full color. Boehlkea fredcochui can be kept and does well in normal community tanks, but will not show as much color. Whatever the setup, the tank should be well filtered and rich in oxygen, and the fish should be kept in groups of 4-6 animals. Do not try to keep the fish in hard alkaline water, since then the fish usually contract fungus, or a bacterial infection.

Feeding:Omnivorous, all food is accepted.

Size: Up to 5 cm.

pH: 5.5-7.5 Hardness below 15 dGH.

Breeding:Unk.

Sexual dimorphism: Females a bit fatter.

Additional: The fish looks a lot like it has been artificially colored, which isn't the case.
