After the retirement of the best two centrebacks Brazil had in Marcio Santos and Aldair in USA94, Antonio Carlos was the only decent Brazilian defender to come through. He has been left out, very suprisingly, from both the 1998 and 2002 World Cups, to the chargin of the great Pele.
