Final Fantasy Bestiary: Chocoboes

CHOCOBOES

MY NAME IS "CHOCO"
COME ON!

Chocobo

CHOCOBO

Some questions will never be answered.
If a tree falls in a forest and no-one's around, does it make a sound?
What is the sound of one hand clapping?
What in Sam Hill is a chocobo?
A few words come to mind when I look at the name. First is "chocolate". Maybe chocoboes really like chocolate. Second is "oboe", a musical instrument. Maybe they like music as well. Then there's "hobo". Since most chocoboes live in forests and don't have houses, they can be considered hoboes.
After aeons of pondering this riddle, I gave in and visited
FFCompendium's name origins page to see if they were any closer to sorting things out. This is what it had to say:

"Chocobos might have gotten their name from a chocolate candy which sold in Japan a few years back (and is still popular). It was called 'Chocoballs' and had a picture of a bird on the front. But unfortunately the bird looks nothing like the familiar yellow chocobo that we all know and love... ^_^"

Is this the answer that we've all been searching for? I've linked to a picture of a chocoball packet (complete with bird) below. Decide for yourself...

Vendetta adds: "Chocobos are clearly Horseclaws, from Miyasaki's fantastic Nausicaä"

I've added a picture of a Horseclaw from the Nausicaä comic below. The other birds in the icture appear to be extinct species that it was modelled on.
