MUMMIES

...I can't think of a decent mummy joke. Sorry.

MUMMY

The ancient Egyptians mummiefied their dead and wrapped them in bandages to preserve them, in the belief that the soul still needed the body after death. In an Egyptian story that dates from at least 200 BC, a prince named Naneferkaptah steals the Book of Thoth, which contains the magic of the god of wisdom Thoth, and is killed by the god as punishment. The priest Setne Khamwas (a historical figure, son of Ramses II) breaks into the tomb to recover the book, but Naneferkaptah's mummy challanges him to a game called senet, the prize being the Book of Thoth. Naneferkaptah wins, but Khamwas takes the book anyway, and is cursed with bad luck until he finally returns the book to Naneferkaptah's tomb. Since then, Egyptian curses and mummies coming to life have snowballed in popularity as a result of novels and films based on the idea. Mummy novels started appearing during the 19th century Egyptology craze, and were kick-started by famous authors such as Arthur Conan Doyle (The Ring of Thoth, Lot 249) and Bram Stoker (The Jewel of Seven Stars). After the discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb there was a renewed interest in the subject, and Universal Studios released The Mummy in 1932, one of the most popular mummy films.
As a side note, Egyptian mummies had bandages wrapped around their whole bodies, binding their legs together and giving them a jelly baby-like shape. Modern takes on the mummy myth - including FF - depicted the limbs wrapped individually. This is understandable, as a monster that had to hop around with its legs stuck together wouldn't be very scary.

KING MUMMY, PHARAOH

Pharaohs were Egyptian kings, so the king mummy is, presumably, intended to be a pharaoh as well. For more on mummies, read their entry.
