Gil
Elvgren (1914–1980) was the most
important pin-up and glamour artist of the twentieth century. During his professional career, which began in the mid 1930s and lasted more than forty years, he established himself as the favorite of pin-up collectors and fans worldwide. Around 1944, Gil Elvgren signed on with Brown and Bigelow, a firm that dominated the field in producing calendars and advertising specialties. They offered him $1000 per pin-up. By his contract terms , Gil Elvgren would turn out twenty calendar girls each year, ranging from cowgirls of the golden west to sultry sirens of the Riviera. His heroines were always caught in humorous but distressing situations, never portrayed as a femme fatale. Her charms always revealed in that fleeting instant when she's been caught in embarrassing situations. His drawings can now be fully appreciated in numerous art book. . |
