Gil Elvgren (1914–1980) was the most
important pin-up and glamour artist of the
twentieth century. During his professional
career, which began in the mid 1930s and
lasted more than forty years, he established
himself as the favorite of pin-up collectors
and fans worldwide. Around 1944, Gil
Elvgren signed on with Brown and
Bigelow, a firm that dominated the field in
producing calendars and advertising specialties.
They offered him $1000 per pin-up.
By his contract terms , Gil  Elvgren would
turn out twenty calendar girls each year,
ranging from cowgirls of the golden west to
sultry sirens of the Riviera. His heroines
were always caught in humorous but distressing situations, never portrayed as a femme fatale.
Her charms always revealed in that fleeting
instant when she's been caught in embarrassing situations. His drawings can now be fully
appreciated in numerous art book.
