Barrasford lies on a valuable seem of rock, known as the Great Whinsill. This impressive outcrop of rock provides the foundation for much of Hadrians Wall.

At Barrasford the rock has been mined for centuries, providing a vital source of employment for the local population. Today the quarry employs few compared to the workforce of old, and the workers are from further afield.
