British Columbia Voting Systems Comparisom

On May 17th, 2005 B.C. will hold a referendum on whether or not they want to replace their current voting system, commonly known as First Past The Post, to a new system called Single Transferable Vote.  The problems with B.C's current voting system were demonstrated during the last two elections.   In 1996,  the NDP party managed to maintain a majority in Parliment despite the fact that the Liberal party recieved more votes then they did.  In 2001, the situation was reversed and the NDP was majorly underepresented, gaining only two seats despite have 25% of the vote.

Below, we have a side by side comparisom of the two voting systems.  On the left hand side we have a ballot for First Past the Post, the current system used in B.C.  On the right we have an STV ballot, which is porposed for use in B.C.
