Christmas Week

In the week leading up to Christmas, we did some touristy stuff in Memphis, including Graceland, before moving on to Nashville for the Christmas Day game.

On our first day in Nashville, we visited the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, which celebrated the achievements in all Nashville sports, from football to rock climbing. When it closed (we had to be asked to leave), we walked down the road in search of a bar. As we approached an intersection, we saw a guy yelling and pointing. We thought he was a local crazy, until we got nearer to the car at the red light.

RANDOM EVENT NO. 4 -  The car was being driven by Little Richard.

Richard was probably glad of the cold weather, and we were glad there were no naked flames around! When we found a bar, we told the barmaid who we'd seen. She replied "We always tell people there are celebrities in this town. It's great that you guys saw one". Random!

Game 2: Denver @ Tennessee

Whose idea was it to go to a Christmas day night game in the snow of Tennessee? Obviously, this is before it got dark.

It was so cold we had to scrape the ice off the seats to sit down (and they laughed at Ian when he put so many thermal layers of clothes on in the hotel but he was the only one still toastie at the end of the game).

It was so cold Ian’s camera batteries even froze. We would love to show you pictures of Denver’s starters, Left Guard Ben Hamilton (Berlin 02), Left Tackle Matt Lepsis (Barcelona 98) and cornerback Kelly Herndon (Barcelona 2000), or the other four Broncos that played in Europe including Safety Nick Ferguson who painted a white skull on his face while playing in Rhein 99-00.

The only photo Ian took before the camera got frostbite!

We are sorry if we were to busy trying to keep warm but let’s just say that Jake Plummer’s Broncos overwhelmed the Titans led by Billy Volek (until he was benched in favour of Doug Johnson). Official game report is here if you are a Broncos fan.

See? We did go to a game! The digicam saves the day.

A disappointing game for the few fans that had made it across the snowbound state to see them. The Cardinals could probably beat them for gameday attendance although officially it was a sell-out of 68,809 fans. At full time there was probably less than 2000 fans left in the stadium. BRRRRRR!

The game hadn't finished when this picture was taken. Note the empty stands.

FINAL SCORE: Denver Broncos 37 - 16 Tennessee Titans

Sunday, December 26

After thawing out overnight, it was time to hit the road to St Louis. We stopped for petrol at a service station just outside Kentucky. As we pulled out, a very large RV pulled in.

RANDOM EVENT NO. 5 -  We ran into Joe Cahn in the middle of nowhere

For those who don’t know, Joe is the Commissioner of Tailgating, and he spends his autumn travelling across the US to visit the best tailgating parties in the NFL and college. His website, Tailgating.com, lists some of the best tailgating places and great tips for making your tailgate a success. Lou had met Joe earlier in the year in DC, so we stopped to say “Hi”. Joe told us where he was going to be come Monday night and we arranged to meet up. Random!
