JUGLANS REGIA
Visioni Parallele
Independent
Official Website

JUGLANS REGIA is a band from Italy dating back to 1995, when back then they were under a different name (RAISING FEAR to be more specific), they used to play N.W.O.B.H.M. Of course with the change of the name the style of the band also changed and after several demos and EP’s the first album of the band is a fact. "Visioni Parallele" is the name and the style is progressive metal with a pitch of progressive rock as well. The songs are full of melody with beautiful keys, nice drums, very good vocals and generally a good work for a debut! JUGLANS REGIA have many to give in the progressive scene and I am sure that this album will please every listener. Get ready to travel to parallel dimensions with JUGLANS REGIA being the tour guide. Enjoy!

TRANSCENDING BIZARRE?
The Serpent's Manifolds
Dissonant Productions
Official Website

It took these guys five whole years to release a new album, but it was certainly worth the wait, cause they simply did a stunning job once again! TRANSCENDING BIZARRE? has one of the weirdest monikers in the metal scene, but that's not the only odd thing about this band, simply because their weirdness and uniqueness expand to the music and the lyrics that make me really proud to know these guys are from my hometown, Thessaloniki. I'm not exaggerating one bit when I say that they deserve to have a world class status, since their black metal has all the credentials and all the might to make this a world renowned band! Listen to me and listen carefully cause "The Serpent's Manifolds" contains a really characteristic and rather innovative blend of avant gard black metal that even becomes majestic at some parts! The guitars weave some incredible harsh and blackened soundscapes, whereas the vocals are there to enrich and enhance the extremity with, other times black and other times death metal, growls. The keyboard parts and programming are enticing and create a dark and imposing aura that surrounds the compositions and in many occasions sounds like it belongs to a horror movie soundtrack. The rhythm section is also amazing and I like the fact that they have also incorporated some progressive structures and themes. All in all this is a true gem, ideal for all the black metallers!!!

Unbelievable and amazing is all I can say! A great album indeed! These words are mere examples of what one can expect to hear from EYEFEAR’s new album. These Australian progressive metallers are back to show us why they are considered to be one of the best bands in this genre. Heaviness to the limits, incredible melodies, keys with great sounds, fast songs, progressive changes in the rhythms and their structures and of course a great vocal work by Mr Danny Cecati, who really gives a different tune in every song. All in all here we have nine compositions of pure heavy progressive metal making this record a true masterpiece and a very good companion for your ears! Be sure not to miss it!

DUSTER 69
Nothing Left
Sleaszy Rider Records
Official Website

DUSTER 69 is a band dating back in 1999 and after many albums, four to be more specific, plus some split ones, they have decided to offer their fans a best of compilation. "Nothing Left" is a pure stoner metal record including seventeen tracks covering the band’s era since their beginning. The album includes songs from live performances, songs that you will hear with a different person doing the vocals plus some unreleased tracks. I believe it is a good work although the production is really awful (the sound is like it is heard from the abyss), but it's only addressed to the fans of the particular genre. Nothing more to say other than the fact that DUSTER 69 will surely please their fans with this record but for me one word is in my mind: Pass Pass Pass.

THE VERY END
Vs. Life
Dockyard 1 Records
Official Website

THE VERY END, this act with the unusual name, comes from Germany and after two demos this is their first complete work. Their musical style is melodic death metal and they are truly worth your listening. Here we have a combination of heavy guitars with sharp edged riffs and twin solos, fast drums with mid tempo tunes and deadly angry vocals with some clean parts giving the songs a sense of hatred. "Vs. Life" consists of twelve compositions, showing the band’s talent and ambitions, that will remind you of acts such as THE HAUNTED (of the first two albums) and IIN FLAMES. A truly very good debut for THE VERY END, who shows us that their end is not near yet and their journey will continue. Enjoy!

SVARTAHRID
Malicious Pride
Soulseller Records
Official Website

Warlike Viking black metal with vast amounts of energy and passion is what SVARTAHRID are offering us here with their latest release "Malicious Pride". This is an enthralling release that will win your support and attention from the very first song. Nice, clear melodic riffs are scatered everywhere throughout the album and sometimes they are accompanied by some imposing keyboard parts. Truth must be told their guitars' melodic lines are among the best I've listened to recently for this specific genre! The rhythm part is perfectly tied together with an extraordinary "chemistry" between the drummer and the bassist that deliver amazing ideas along with the rest of the band members. So in the upcoming war we are on SVARTAHRID's side, simply because our pride is malicious too!!! AVE SVARTAHRID! Keep the black flame alive!!!

MEMORY GARDEN
Carnage Carnival
VIC Records
Official Website

MEMORY GARDEN is a band hailing us from the U.S.A and this is their fourth album. Their style is mainly doom metal but on the last two albums the band has added some progressive elements which really turned out to be very good. There are, of course, the heavy guitars with the amazing riffs, the classic mid tempo hard pounding drums with many changes in the rhythms and the deadly killing vocals giving the dark (I would also say gothic atmosphere) the album needs ."Carnage Carnival" is a record that will truly leave everyone pleased as it offers both heaviness and melody. There will also be a limited edition which will include a bonus DVD with live performances of the band, a studio documentary and video clips. Nothing more to say than to inform you that you should prepare for a truly heavy metal album. Enjoy!

THINE EYES BLEED
Thine Eyes Bleed
The End Records
Official Website

The sophomore release of these Canadians finds them really energetic and aggressive offering us catchy melodic death/thrash metal. Their compositions are tight with a heavy and really precise rhythm section and a great guitar work delivering some really catchy riffs and beautiful solos. The skills and technique of these guys are undoubted and they are accompanied by some good, though typical death metal vocals. Generally this self titled album is really good and solid and will definitely be appreciated by the fans of this sound, however there's nothing different or pioneering about it. The songs are great, but still we've listened to them a thousand times already. There's nothing new to them that can make a difference, so to cut a long story short this is a decent work, but it's addressed only to the die hard fans of melodic death/thrash metal.

KHOLD
Hundre ar Gammal
Tabu Recordings
Official Website

"Hundre ar Gammal" is an album filled with mid tempo black metal songs that have a minimalistic character in the riffs department which are being repeated over and over again within each song. The melodies are based exclussively on the guitars, having a heavy, sinister, ominous approach. The vocals, although, they have absolute black metal aesthetics, they have a very good pronunciation and accent. In this particular work, I have to be honest with you, I got a bit tired of this certain style, but truth must be told, this is a very honest and pure album that came from the depths of the band members' hearts and is addressed to a specific black metal audience that has no commercial orientations. The best moments of this album are definitely the seventh and nineth track.

W.E.B.
Jesus Heist
Sleaszy Rider Records
Official Website

Three years after their "Don't Wake Futility" album, the Greek band W.E.B. is back again with their sophomore work that proves to be a true masterpiece as it will definitely grasp your attention from the very first tunes till the album's over... and yet you'll have the urge to push the play button again like I did! These guys know how to deliver catchy dark metal and with that I mean a beautiful mixture of melodic black/death metal with a modern, industrial twist, gothic elements and beautiful dark atmospheres! W.E.B. are craftsmen and there's no doubt about it since they manage to write amazing compositions that balance the extreme and the melodic parts of their music in a mesmerizing way! The guitars are powerful and present us some really catchy riffs and tunes that stick to your mind, whereas the rhythm section is really solid and precise like a metronome and supports the themes played by the guitars. "Jesus Heist" has some beautiful keyboard parts that are mainly supplementary, with their sole purpose being to enrich and enhance the rest of the melodies whilst offering them a darker, gothic touch. The vocal styles range in a wide spectrum from dark, gothic recitations, to screams and growls and of course there are some female vocals here and there that are simply stunning! I had loved their debut album and I knew they had more to give in the future, but still the quality of this release is beyond imagination! A truly awesome band that should become world wide famous, because they certainly deserve it. Highly recommended!!

THIASOS TRELLWN
Omorfa Plasmata
CyberDoll Records
Official Website

I'm definitely a metal freak, there's no doubt about it! However this doesn't mean I can't appreciate good rock bands when I come across them and this is the case with THIASOS TRELON, a Greek rock band, whose music actually, if I want my description and presentation to be totally accurate and correct, has many metal elements and their sound hasn't got that mellow and cheesy sound that most rock bands have. "Omorfa Plasmata" is an album filled with catchy riffs, nice hooks and sing along choruses that stick to your mind and given the chance I think these guys could make a break through with their music. I loved the doom metal themes they have in some of their songs and I think those mid tempo moments offer them volume and power! The production is very well taken care of and if you don't mind the lyrics being in Greek, then I think you should give these guys a chance!

KAMPFAR
Heimgang
Napalm Records
Official Website

Pagan folk black metal is what the Norwegians KAMPFAR present us here and "Heimgang" is a natural continuation of their previous album "Kvass". Haunted, frozen riffs that transpire the smell of woods, adorn this whole work that is surrounded with a wonderful atmosphere and aesthetics of a blackened snow-covered landscape. The tempos range from mid to fast, without any excesses or exaggerations and the rhythm section supports and enhances perfectly the melodic part of the compositions. The production is well taken care of in a Norwegian black metal style, without though any "dirt" and it honours the band and their tradition. This album is highly recommended to all the black metal fans, since this is a very honest work from a group with a soul!

BURNED IN EFFIGY
Burned in Effigy
Independent
Official Website

...and when we abandon all hope for innovation or uniqueness in the contemporary scene, bands like BURNED IN EFFIGY make their appearance and prove us wrong! What's even more amazing is that this is the band's debut album, so we can only imagine what they have in store for us in the future. I really hope they find their way and sign a good record deal because these guys surely deserve it! Their music has this balance between the modern and the old school sound, an interesting blend offered through the band's perspective and taste. I've been listening to this album for months and not only it isn't becoming tiring, but it's been turned into a classic choice for me when I feel tired from all the promos I listen to, cause I know I will enjoy this album. Now the sixteen tracks that comprise this release have a duration of approximately an hour, but don't get intimidated by that simply because each song has a different vibe and the end result is diverse and rich in sounds. Musically I'd place them somewhere between the thrash metal and the hardcore genres, but add to these a great deal of classic heavy metal themes and many catchy a la PANTERA riffs and you have a vague idea of what this release is all about. The rhythm section varies from mid to fast, but never extremely fast and the vocals are really passionate, either they are clean or harsher and more screaming. All in all this is a great release and I'm really happy I came across this band! They can surely count me as a fan!

Christine  Parastatidou

Thanks goes to the band for sending me this 60 minute self-titled debut that explores a blend of thrash metal and hard rock with some intriguing groove to each track. According to Alex their guitarist "we play what we like", which is entirely evident because BURNED IN EFFIGY offers some innovation to the metal scene. With Jared on guitar and vocals as well as Zak on drums plus vocals, their sound offers an intriguing style because it isn't just screaming or extremely harsh. Their vocal output offers to it a blend of different styles that give plenty of unique sounds which remind me of old school metal with a newer tone. The recording as a whole turned out really good - each instrument well mixed overall. The guitar riffs have an intriguing style to them because they reflect a hard rock/thrash/blues blend in which every track has a bit of each style to it. The tempos aren't exceptionally fast, each song is entirely unique and the solos are blues based. Sixteen tracks are a lot for a debut though each one carries its own impressive and creative blend. The fact that this band sent me their album is an eye-opener because it's good for promotional purposes. Readers should visit their web site and buy this album to form their own opinion. It won't disappoint!

DEMONIZER
Triumphator
Folter Records
Official Website

Amazing, fast, energetic, sweeping black metal with a great deal of thrash elements from the 90s is what we are offered here by DEMONIZER, a well bonded band with a strong character. Their guitars' melodic lines are perfectly tied together with their ultra fast rhythms which in many parts are turned into thrash riffs that lead you into a relentless and ongoing headbanging. There are no keyboards in this release and the whole melodic elaboration is based only on the guitars which sow and nourish the hatred in our souls for the current situation and state of humans. Technically it's obvious the guys have skills and they create a wonderful and beautiful warlike atmosphere. DEMONIZER are an underground group that will always nourish and keep the black metal flame alive!!!

CARDIAC ARREST
Cadaverous Presence
Epitome Productions
Official Website

This band belts out some serious old school death metal in the vein of CANNIBAL CORPSE. The songs are filled with all different time signatures and some even hyper blasts! The leads feature mostly sweeps, arpeggios, etc. Vocal wise it's Adam Scott (lead guitar/lead vocals) belting out some deep throat. Tom (rhythm guitar/vocals), Dave (bass/vocals) and Jim (drums/vocals) also contribute some high end screams for variety. What I like about this album is that there is no compromise musically speaking. These guys are passionate about what they do produce which is this old school sound, gruesome lyrics, and awesome production. The music just flows with all sorts of riffs... I think that these guys will be around for a while belting out non-compromising works. I haven't heard their debut yet but I'm sure it's in the same vein of this release. Guitars are way tuned down I think to B-flat to produce the lowest form of death rot as they call it type of music. The whole album is filled with tons of awesome sounds. One riff in particular sounds a bit like SLAYER's "Mandatory Suicide" at least the intro part of that song. It's what it reminds me of at least. None of the lyrics are in this insert but you can read a few on their main web site. They sing mostly about gore, horror, etc. You can also visit their MySpace page here: http://www.myspace.com/deathrot/. Amazing that this band has been around since 1997! Now with an awesome lineup they've produced some work which is definitely worth checking out. After several listens to this album, I would say that CARDIAC ARREST needs more attention from those into the old school style of death metal. The reason is because a lot of bands over the years change their style and go to crap musically. CARDIAC ARREST doesn't seem like a band that will follow this path. They're going to be around a lot longer than most of these style of bands. Songs that are really worth checking out are "In His Name They Spill Blood" and the title track. Honestly, I thought the whole album was killer. I'm just more into the guitar's sound than anything. Adam seriously shreds on pretty much all tracks. I like the variety in the vocals too. It isn't just low end bellowing like old CANNIBAL CORPSE via Chris Barnes era.

BABYLON MYSTERY ORCHESTRA
Axis of Evil
Independent
Official Website

BABYLON MYSTERY ORCHESTRA, this unconventional and pioneering one man band from the U.S., strikes back with its fourth full length release that is here not only to allure you with its dark melodies and heavy atmosphere, but it's also here to make you reflect on some serious topics such as conspiracies, politics and religions, the latter of which is the main concept behind "Axis of Evil". Sydney Allen Johnson the main man behind this unique musical endavour is offering us here not only interesting music, but also clever and sharp lyrics that are food for thought... This means that the lyrics will make you think and maybe even reconsider things whether you agree with Sydney's point of view or not. It's the kind of band whose music coexists harmonically with the lyrics and one couldn't be without the other. One other thing I love about this band is that it has identity, originality and a recognizable sound... it's the band you either love or hate and personally I choose to love it! The new album moves in the same direction as the band's previous releases, so we're talking about a type of symphonic gothic/heavy metal with a great deal of doom elements. BABYLON MYSTERY ORCHESTRA has kept those great, dark and eerie atmospheres that spice up the songs and actually I can't say the sound has been altered or changed much... It has just evolved and progressed. The main difference I found is on the guitars that this time are heavier, more voluminous and sound angrier than ever before... Sydney's vocals are deep and dark and some times they sound "resigned" and melancholic and other times they sound full of rage and might! The production is once again really good and the booklet is, as always, extremely well taken care of and with lots of information in it! If you are bold and really open minded, then here you are...

GRAVE DIGGER
Ballads of a Hangman
Napalm Records
Official Website

I didn’t know that GRAVE DIGGER were about to release a new album and when I saw the promo of this album, I said to myself "Oh my god! What the hell are they doing? Did they get sentimental and released an album full of ballads?" Well, the title is tricky as you will find out if you continue reading this review. Before I proceed with the presentation of the album, I have to note something... There is no doubt that the line – up that GRAVED DIGGER has now, can be simply characterized as the dream team of Teutonic metal, however the band didn’t give us a release equal to the musicians that are part of it. Well, they didn’t give us till now or to be more accurate till January 2009 (since that’s the date the album will be released on). “Ballads of a Hangman” is what every fan of the band and every fan of Teutonic steel wished for! Here you will find the razor edged guitars that cut off heads and choruses that will send you to halls up high full of ecstasy. Chris Boltendahl is in a great form and sings like an unleashed dog of hell. I don't want to tire you much, so I'll wrap it all up by saying that this album is a masterpiece and belongs to the top releases of this band no doubt… Let’s hope that RUNNING WILD, U.D.O. and BLIND GUARDIAN give us such quality albums in the future. Don’t even think of having second thoughts on buying this masterpiece. As for those that accuse or laugh at this kind of music, I don’t give a fuck cause that’s FUCKIN METAL!!!

FUROR
Those Chords Made Chaos
Reid Records
Official Website

What an eloquent and ideal way to make a statement have these Greeks found! They've managed to incorporate the whole essence and dynamics of their music in their debut's title... because this is what this album is all about... some chords producing chaos, but a chaos that, no matter how contradictory this may sound, is disciplined and organized. FUROR is one of the few Greek bands that made me feel proud of our scene, simply because these guys have it all. They have a sense of rhythm, harmony and melody and yet their songs are a full blown chaos, brutal, aggressive and unleasing vast amounts of energy right in your face! I need something special, and I don't mean originality or anything similar, to make me respect and dig a release... what I'm talking about is passion, energy and the ability to balance the elements that comprise a band's sound... FUROR have it all like I've already said and this made them release a top notch hardcore/metalcore album that not only didn't tire me, but on the contrary it made me push the play button twice more after the first listening was over. Yeah! FUROR is a force to be reckoned with! Keep an eye on these guys! They seem to have a bright future ahead of them!

SHADOWKEEP
The Hourglass Effect
Melissa Records
Official Website

SHADOWKEEP from Great Britain never rush to release their next album... I don’t know the reasons why, but when they do release a new album, you are sure that you will listen to something interesting. “The Hourglass Effect” supposedly was released in 2006, but in truth will hit the stores on 21st of November 2008. The band's music hasn’t changed one bit and personally I think that in this release they sound even better than before. The sound of the album is very solid and the musical ideas are flowing in such a way that keep the interest of the listener intact from the beginning till the end. I won’t be exaggerating if I say that there is not even one dull moment on the album. You will just find songs that you'll like more or less, but anyhow the album keeps its freshness from the first till its last second. This release is what a U.S. power metal fan needs to listen to at the moment (even if the band comes from Great Britain). All in all SHADOWKEEP with their third release prove to all of us that they are a force to be reckoned with in the power metal genre. Finally, with this album the band introduces its new singer Richie Wicks who does a very good job. Nothing more to add! The fans of the good U.S. power metal know what they have to do on the 21st of November…

PLEURISY
Seizure
Sleaszy Rider Records
Official Website

This band is no more... and I really can't see or understand what made them split up. You see their death metal is really catchy with lots of groovy parts and riffs that stick to your mind. The songs on "Seizure" have volume and substance and are enriched and infused with some killer riffs! So this 5-piece combo from the Netherlands has decided to call it a day after releasing their third studio work and I really hope they reconsider, cause they have something really great going on here! Their compositions can be simply described as mid to up tempo, extremely heavy death metal holocausts with powerful rhythms! However apart from the groovy parts and the heavy atmosphere, I also loved the classic themes that appear here and there and the progressive cuts and tunes that are perfectly embodied in their songs. The end result is really homogeneous, yet extremely diverse and is accompanied by a good production and a fitting artwork... As for favourites, I really don't think I can pick any... Get your hands on this!

ELVENKING
Two Tragedy Poets (...And a Caravan of Weird Figures)
AFM Records
Official Website

In such short notice ELVENKING release a second album, only this one is a special since it is an acoustic release. It seems that the guys from Italy are in great inspiration. Being fan of this band, I have to admit that their previous release left me with a sense of bitterness and disappointment. Not because the band chose to add some new elements in its sound (they had some melodic death metal parts in their previous releases), but it seemed to me that the band was “forced” in a way to follow a dark sound that didn’t fit them or at least they didn’t know how to handle it. Anyway “Two Tragedy Poets…” seems to put things on the right path. Here the band seems to find the optimistic view it had in its previous albums and also the jeering attitude that describes all these people that had been touched by the fairies… No need to take everything so seriously in the shitty world we live. There's also the bright side of the moon. It is a greater revolution if we can find the strength to laugh at all these bad things that happen from time to time and it’s even better to show some brighter aspects of our modern world. That’s, in my opinion, what the music of ELVENKING is all about and I am glad that they have realized it too and released this album. Definitely one of my favorite releases of this year and I recommend it to all the folk metal freaks out there. Listen to this album and we'll all meet in the land of the fairies and elves :))

DEATHCHAIN
Death Eternal
Dynamic Arts Records
Official Website

The Finnish DEATHCHAIN are back again a year after the release of their "Cult of Death" album and their fourth studio work presents a more straightforward death metal approach of their music. DEATHCHAIN started as a thrash/death metal act and kept this balance with their previous singer, Rotten, but as soon as he got replaced by K.J. Khaos, about two years ago the band has started focusing more on the death metal aspect of their music and adding more elements of that genre. Perhaps it's the K.J. Khaos' vocals that make this change more obvious and prominent, but either way the end result is pretty good and catchy with a lot of hooks and riffs that stick to your mind. The musicianship of the band moves on really high standards and the tempos vary from mid to fast, offering the necessary variety. However "Death Eternal" doesn't make the difference and isn't here to offer anything new... I mean it's close, music-wise, to the previous albums of the band and to the sound of many other death/thrash metal bands. So the bottom line is that this is a decent album that's going to be appreciated by a certain group of people who love the old fashioned death/thrash metal sound, but the other should make sure they listen to it first before purchasing it...

RED HARVEST
A Greater Darkness
Season Of Mist
Official Website

I'm new to hearing industrial/electronic type of metal, but this release has gotten me hooked! At first, my impression was that I could never really get into these styles. Though now I know I'm wrong about that! "A Greater Darkness" explores many different changes throughout the entire album. From the beginning, it represents a more death metal influenced type of sound. But wholly on this album the atmosphere is grim and filled with many different tempo changes. I'm not much into the electronic type of songs but I am still giving it a chance for me to get used to. I haven't heard their previous releases... though they've been around since 1989! Pretty damn amazing to me. I just heard about this band by a friend who's not into mainstream type of stuff. I'm not either really nor is this band. Their writing style is kind of weird... some songs are pretty heavy with like I mentioned a more type of death metal sound to them. But then they linger into a more industrial type of reflection. The vocals vary from heavy throat to a more eerie tone. Pretty interesting. The guitars especially on "Antidote" are brutal then there's fluctuations between that and the industrial sound. All of the tracks to me are good but just plain eccentric. They sing about the Apocalypse, technology, and hate (source: http://metal-archives.com/band.php?id=4665). It's not mindless Satanic stuff that other bands sing about. Their songs are well thought out. I'm more motivated now to actually purchase their older material. I've heard some... it's a little different than "A Greater Darkness" but for the most part really good sounding. The riffs here are unique in that they are slow at times but pretty catchy.  Especially the first song that I mentioned "Antidote".  Wholly different type of work! There really aren't any solos just mainly rhythms...that to me is OK but I would just like to have heard some leads. I suppose they just wanted to focus more on the rhythm guitars. Some songs are totally electronic which is an acquired taste to like I suppose. They mix it with a few songs yet others are only electronic. For the most part, they're mixed. I kind of admire this because like I mentioned it's not just one genre they're attacking it's a few throughout this entire album. Do yourself a favor and pick up this unique release!

RAVEN'S CREED
Militia of Blood Sacrifice
Iron Pig Records
Official Website

RAVEN'S CREED is a UK based band that consists of some well known musicians and more particularly we find amongst their ranks Ben Ward from ORANGE GOBLIN, Steve Watson from IRON MONKEY and Fraser Craske from the SABBAT. I guess their musical identity lies somewhere in between... They are labeled as a death metal act, though I don't think I agree with this description... to me this debut 4-track EP moves in the old school thrash metal genre with a great deal of punk elements. In fact there were moments that RAVEN'S CREED reminded me of SACRED REICH's "The American Way" era... So I think the genre thrash metal applies more to their sound which is rich and powerful with some great riffs that stick to your mind and with a really uptempo rhythm section! The compositions are well structured and the melodies stick to your mind from the first listen! This is some top notch headbanging material that the thrash maniacs who dig the 80s scene will definitely love!! What definitely needs improvement though is the production that is very noisy and low... I know 80s thrash requires a dirty sound, but still it shouldn't impede the listening pleasure of the album...

SEVERED SAVIOUR
Servile Insurrection
Candlelight Records
Official Website

After 5 years of silence the Californians SEVRED SAVIOUR are back again with their sophomore full length work showcasing some high energy and brutal as hell death metal compositions. Musically the band belongs to the genre of American brutal death metal, sounding close to MORBID ANGEL, which means that most probably every MORBID ANGEL fan will dig this, not because of its originality or pioneering nature... nothing of these two here, but because of the passion, endless energy and atrocity of the songs contained here. What really impressed me is the band's skills since we are talking about some incredible performances and amazing technique from all the band members. The rhythm section is really precise, voluminous and stable and I enjoyed the changes in the beats from blasting to slower and to fast double bass parts which are supported by an incredible bass player... and then of course there's the guitar that delivers some insane structures and riffs and some really technical and progressive parts. I won't mention anything about the solos which are truly superb! As for the vocalist... he offers some slow and fitting guttural vocals that support and enrich the aggressiveness of this album. So if you are looking for a combination of brutality and technique, then you'll find them both on "Servile Insurrection", but if you are looking for something original and unique, then you'll have to look some place else... This is good stuff, but nothing we haven't heard before...

MINDCRIME
Strandead
Black Bards Entertainment
Official Website

This is the latest release of MINDCRIME and for the first time it was released in May 2006. The sound of the band hasn’t changed much in comparison to their previous release. They are still mixing power with melodic death metal. The only thing they have improved, in my opinion, is the structure of their songs that sound more direct and less chaotic from their previous release. In general, though, they didn’t impress me and although I have listened to the album without getting tired, I couldn’t find anything that could hold my interest and make me listen to them again with only one exception that listens to the name “Soil for Growning”. Also on this album Charles Rytkönen of MORGANA LEFAY participates in two songs entiled “Forsaken Smile” and “Deadwalk Scenery”. “Strandead” can be recommended only to people that are fans of bands like IN FLAMES and EVERGREY and they want to listen to bands that sound close to them. The rest of you, like me, should pass and look for other release(s).

This is the third release for the German power metal band MINDCRIME. This album was released in 2005, but this is the first time that it finds distribution here in my country, Greece. I don’t know, if you have ever listened to them, but this is the first time that I had the opportunity to check this band out. MINDCRIME on this album mix the power metal sound with some melodic death and progressive metal parts, but I think that they mostly belong to the power metal genre. I have to admit that the band has some very good ideas and the members are all very skilful and talented musicians, but the whole result tired me and didn’t leave me with something to remember. You see, in my opinion, MINDCRIME fall in the trap of putting as many ideas as they can in a song without combining them in a proper and natural way. So there were many the times that I had the feeling I was listening to many different songs, although I was listening to the same track. I can’t say they are bad, but I believe that they have to make their compositions simpler with simpler structure or at least to move from one musical idea to another in a more natural way. This is only for the fanatics of modern European power metal…

HELLVETO
Neoheresy
Pulverised Records
Official Website

The Polish one man band that answers to the name HELLVETO seems to be restless and highly productive since they've already released 11 full length studio albums and along them a few best of compilations within the 13 years this band exists. In fact L.O.N., the man behind this band, has been releasing two and three albums each year, a very impressive number if you ask me, especially if we take into consideration the fact that he's the one composing the songs, playing all the instruments and making the arrangements... and in the meantime he is involved in a few other bands as well. The aforementioned facts would be a drawback for most bands since after a while they'd start repeating themselves or they'd release mediocre albums. However HELLVETO offer us some top notch compositions in the genre of orchestral pagan black metal with songs that have an innate darkness and blackness and a pure epic feeling! L.O.N's vocals are really powerful and convey a feeling of pure darkness that is bound perfectly both with the black metal parts and the acoustic, orchestral melodies. In fact there were moments that "Neoheresy" made me feel as if I was listening to a film's soundtrack... so powerful its structures and melodies are... This is a really catchy and accessible album without ever becoming pretentious or fake!

ADORNED BROOD
Hiltia + Wigand Re – Release
Black Bards Entertainment
Official Website

This is not a new release from the German black/folk metallers ADORNED BROOD. They have re – released their first 2 albums on a double CD release with all the songs digitally remastered plus some videos and one new song, entitled “Sons of the Damned” which is killer! In general, I have to say that the style of ADORNED BROOD is not my favorite and is not the kind of music that I like to listen to often, but if I want to be just, then I have to recognize that this band is one of the most interesting of the specific genre. Having as a base the black metal sound they blend it with medieval and folk melodies played by acoustic guitars and a flute. They also use some clear male and female vocals, especially in their second release, “Wigand”. Most of the songs are written in the English language, but they also sing in German in some tracks included in this album. The songs have a long duration, but in most of them, they have achieved to keep my interest from the start till the end. I have to notice here that in some parts the way they use the flute and the acoustic guitars brought to my mind JETHRO TULL and SKYCLAD. One other thing that they have to work more on is the lyrics which are very typical for the kind of music they play. Anyway, the fans of pagan/folk black metal will find here a lot of good ideas accompanied by a skilful playing. Check them out!

ADORNED BROOD
Heldentat
Black Bards Entertainment
Official Website

Well here in Greece we receive the new releases very quickly it seems... You see “Heldendtat” was released in September 2006 and it was a new album and since then ADORNED BROOD have prepared new material which will be released in November 21 under the name “Noor”. Anyway, let me present this specific album. I had the chance to listen to their first 2 albums and I have noticed that a lot of changes have happened to the sound of the band from then till now. OK! They have kept the folk elements in their sound and especially the use of the flute, which in some parts, as I mention in my presentation above, reminded me of JETHRO TULL. Except for that the band has reduced the black metal elements in its sound which are obvious only in the use of the black metal growls that are made by the singer of the band. ADORNED BROOD have adopted a more modern and groovy/rhythmic sound in their music. To make it simple they have many common elements with bands like IN EXTREMO and SUBWAY TO SALLY. However these guys had the magic touch and created music that kept my interest from the beginning till the end. And personally I believe they are far better composers than the aforementioned bands and much more promoted compatriots. Finally, you have to know the German language in order to understand the lyrics since all their songs except “Farewell” are written in this language.

LET ME DREAM
Soulshine
Black Bards Entertainment
Official Website

LET ME DREAM is a band that hails us from Finland and dates back in 1995. After two full length albums it was time for them to make a new release. "Soulshine" is the name of the album but the title doesn't apply to the style of the band. And by that I mean that the band plays a gothic style of metal with some death elements mostly produced by the angry harsh vocals. However, there's also a melody flowing through the whole album and the amazing keys are being responsible for it. Add in all of the previous, the heavy guitar solos and riffs, the mid tempo drums giving the band a doom style, the dark gloomy atmosphere and the clean parts in the vocal section and you will have nine compositions of pure melodic death gothic metal. There is also as bonus a video track for the song "Dust of Time". I really think that LET ME DREAM is a band that has come to stay so sit back, doze off and get ready to dream... or maybe have a nightmare?

DAWN OF WINTER
The Peaceful Dead
Massacre Records
Official Website

Gerrit Philipp Mutz and Jörg Michael Knittel, mostly known from the band SACRED STEEL, seem to be two restless souls that cannot find satisfaction in only one genre of the heavy metal music. As true metal maniacs that they are, they have formed amongst other bands DAWN OF WINTER, which is a pure doom metal band (something very rare in our days). “The Peaceful Dead” is the second release of this band and the doom metal fans will find here a release that deserves their attention. They will have the chance to listen to good old fashioned doom metal that has its roots in bands like CANDLEMASS mainly, PENTAGRAM, TROUBLE and a bit in SOLITUDE AETURNUS. The thematology of the lyrics are about doom metal, despair, darkness and various epic themes. Stories that are so usual for doom metal music and because of them this sound distinguishes itself from the others. Finally, even the biggest “enemies” of Gerrit will agree here that his voice fits perfectly to the sound of DAWN OF WINTER! A good release for the friends of this kind of music…

TRAIN OF THOUGHT
Half Empty Independence
Independent
Official Website

TRAIN OF THOUGHT belts out a few different styles here...Hardcore, metal and rock. These 4 beer drinking buddies are from North Kingstown, Rhode Island. To me, they sound a lot like BURNED IN EFFIGY. This release was recorded at the Studio Static Productions by engineer/producer Peter LaGrasse. The production here is decent but not the greatest. The band consists of Eric Burlingham on lead vocals/guitar, Jake Perry on lead guitar/vocals, Ed Bilodeau on drums and Dennis Stimpert on bass/vocals. As far as the voices go they're mostly screaming, yelling with some clean as well. A good blend of variety on their part! I for the most part like their chainsaw rhythm guitars. The leads here aren't that well concocted but Jake shows promise on his outputs. Tempos are not really fast just more groove stricken. Seems like they have a heavy blues influence to their writing style. That's not a bad thing though don't get me wrong just not heavy enough for me. You can visit their MySpace page here: http://www.myspace.com/trainofdrunks. Check out the track "Addicted" for starters. That song is pretty bad ass. Anyway, this 12 song debut shows some promise. The band is already working on new material which should be out sometime in 2009. Same goes for their web site...it should be up also in 2009.

HILDR VALKYRIE
Shield Brothers of Valhalla
Stygian Crypt Records
Official Website

Hildr Valkyrie is one of the female singers in the international supergoup FOLKEARTH and of course she makes appearances in many other acts as well. This is her debut album in which she continues in the same way as in FOLKEARTH meaning that she sings about Norse myths and legends in a Viking style. It is an album in which one will find the epic feeling deep in every song but nothing that gives power or heaviness or even some metal sounds to them... Moreover the production  is not so good which is also a disadvantage as the ethereal vocals of dear Hildr and the rest of the instruments are not heard so well. We have ten songs with two cover versions, one of BATHORY’s "Ring of Gold" and one of FALKENBACH’s "Havamal", two good choices in my opinion but not two good additional performances. I really liked her in her parts in FOLKEARTH, but on this album I will surely pass...

SECRET SPHERE
Sweet Blood Theory
Dockyard 1 Records
Official Website

SECRET SPHERE is a band from Italy which I really love and have watched its steps from their first studio work. This is their fifth album so far and the Italian power metallers have truly earned a place in the worldwide power metal scene. "Sweet Blood Theory" is the name of their newest work and what is there for me to say except that it is really amazing! Guitar riffs heavy as they can get and solos from beyond, hard pounding fast drums combined with mid tempo ones, very good melodies from the keys blending equally with the whole instrumental miracle and of course vocals both heavy and clean giving the songs just the clitch they need. Twelve compositions of pure heaviness and power that will make your head bang and your neck to feel true pain. I am surely looking forward to their next work but till then stay heavy and may the power be with you!

JIMI JAMISON
Crossroads Moments
Frontiers Records
Official Website

Jimi Jamison is the well known singer of SURVIVOR and COBRA, two bands that need no introduction. This is his third solo attempt and it really rocked the hell out of me. Jimi Jamison’s voice is really remarkable and together with a plethora of musicians, meaning of course those who do guest solo appearances he has created a very good album. "Crossroads Moments" is a record containing all the elements needed for a hard rock album meaning melodic guitars with nice solos, great work from the keys, happy tunes with catchy refrains, beautiful ballads, etc. So what do you need more? Jimi Jamison is indeed a hard working singer and this album will surely be loved. Enjoy!

THE GATHERING
Downfall
VIC Records
Official Website

While being in search of a new singer the Dutch gothic metallers have decided to give their fans a chance to know the band’s early years and sounds. "Downfall" is a double album containing demo songs, rare songs from singles and live performances on their EPs as well  as a cover version of CELTIC FROST’s "Dethroned Emperor" which is really worth listening and generally this release contains all the elements which will give the listener an idea of what the band sounded like before the coming of Anneke and the complete change in their sound. I believe it is a very good decision and work as many people don’t know the band from their first albums and everyone will find it really interesting. Enjoy!

CATCH 22
Soulreaper: Evilution/Devilution
Metal On Metal Records
Official Website

I would like to give you some info on this album that I discovered in the internet search I did, before presenting it to you. The album was released for the first time in 2007 under the title “Soulreaper Vol. 1” and it was self – financed. During the recordings of the album the band had composed 22 songs, but due to the lack of money they had included only 11 and they had planned to release the other ones in the future. However, luck seems to have smiled upon this band (in my opinion they deserve it) and they signed a deal with Metal On Metal Records. This fact gave them the chance to release all the songs they have composed. Musically now, CATCH 22 haven’t changed a bit from their sound, but they have only added some more classic metal parts in their sound in order to make it more intriguing. So, the band continues to play speed/heavy metal that draws a lot of influences from bands like SAVATAGE (first 2 albums) and the 80’s TESTAMENT. The double CD release must not scare you since most of the songs are very interesting and full of energy! OK, you can’t avoid some mediocre songs I think when you release an album of such a long duration, but in general CATCH 22 are doing a fine job and I think that the friends of the U.S. speed/power metal will find here a release that will keep them busy for a long time.

RANDOMWALK
Redemption
I For An I Records
Official Website

RANDOMWALK is a Greek band hailing us from Athens and although they were formed back in 2005 this is their debut album. "Redemption" is its title and as it is already mentioned, this is also the feeling that could describe the atmosphere in this record. With very good melodies coming from the keys, heavy guitars with dark solos, fast drums with a gloomy sound and both clean and harsh vocals giving the songs a strange attitude, the guys from Athens can be proud of releasing a very good debut. I would describe their sound as melodic death metal with some metalcore elements and I hope that RANDOMWALK will continue in the same way as they do now. Till their next work….

INGRIMM
Ihr Sollt Brennen
Black Bards Entertainment
Official Website

The band is about to release its second album, but this, their debut, is the one I have in my hands and so this is the one I will present. On their debut album INGRIMM seem to be the typical folk metal band that mixes heavy metal with bag pipes and they sing in their mother tongue, which is the German language. I think that you pretty much get the picture and if band names like IN EXTREMO, SALTATIO MORTIS and SUBWAY TO SALLY surface your mind then you are on the right road. Most of the times these kind of bands manage to spread their enthusiasm to the listener in the first listening, however when you listen to them a second and third time, you realize that although they have good folk melodies they haven't worked as  much as they should on the metal parts of their sound. So all you get is a typical rhythm section that is so common to all these bands that you cannot even say who is who (or more properly which is which as we're talking about bands). INGRIMM, in my opinion, have the elements to make the difference, something that is obvious in the first 3 songs of the album, but from a point on they fell in the same trap and do nothing more than repeate again and again the same rhythm sections. They have some good elements that people who like this kind of sound will appreciate, but they have to work more on their metal parts, if they want to create something that it will be worth to be mentioned.

HONEYMOON SUITE
Cliffton Hill
Frontiers Records
Official Website

HONEYMOON SUITE is a band that dates back in 1982 and comes to us from Niagra Falls. The two guys behind this band Johnny Dee and Derry Grehan have decided that it was time to make a new album. So after many past releases, six to be more specific, having played along bands such as STATUS QUO, ZZ TOP, HEART and JOURNEY, the band is back with a new record. "Cliffton Hill" is the name of the place where the band was originally formed and what else to expect than classic A.O.R sounds? Heavy guitars with very good twin solos and a sense of love and passion, mid-tempo drums, groovy sounds, catchy tunes, beautiful ballads, nice melodies from the keys are the main ingredients here so in general this is an album containing all the elements a hard rock record needs. HONEYMOON SUITE is a band that will offer you pleasant moments of listening so if you are ready to rock then this is the right place and the right band. Enjoy!
