Sunday 5th September saw the Eagles commence the defence of their ED1championship title.A team who have not been able to train because of the problems with the home ice faced Flintshire Freeze at Deeside .
1st Period
The game was still without goal when at 3:05 Eagles Andrew Payne picked up a 2 minute tripping penalty , the penalty was played off without any loss .At 6.32 the Freeze opened their goal account with a goal from Phil Brook assisted by Mark Stokes. With the Eagles trailing by one goal Flintshire picked up their first penalty at 12:24 when Paul Richardson received a 2 minute holding penalty , Eagles power play was short lived when Brian Perry collected a 2 minute tripping penalty at 12:51 the first closed Freeze 1:Eagles 0.
2nd Period
The second opened with Eagles Brian Perry collecting a 2 minute holding penalty at 21:49.Flintshires Pete Foudes and Billingham blue liner Ian Richardson sat for a 2 minute coincidental at 21:55.The penalty trouble started to mount for the Eagles with Paul Windridge and Brian Perry both picking up 2 minute slashing penalty's within a minute of each other. The second goal for Freeze came from Phil Stokes assisted by Paul Richardson and Phil Brook.Shortly followed at 23:42 Freeze`s Davies scored No 3 assisted by Phil Brook. Flintshire went short handed when Dave Clancy picked up a 2 minute roughing penalty at 25:53.Billingham got off the mark with a goal from Martin Lewis assisted by Andrew Payne and Ian Richardson to make it 3:1. A penalty at 31:27 saw Eagles Brian Perry sitting for a 2 minute hooking penalty. The penalty was played off without loss then at 34:42 Flintshires Davies collected a 2 minute hooking penalty , unfortunately Eagles failed to capitilise on the power play. Another power play came the way of the Eagles at 36:52 when Flintshires Davies collected a 2 minute high sticks penalty , with another power play opportunity Billingham found themselves punished when Pete Foudes scored a short handed goal to make it Flintshire 4 : Billingham 1.The second period closed with the Flintshire bench collecting a 2 minute delaying game penalty .
3rd Period
2 minutes and fifty nine seconds into the third Mark Stokes hit home to make it Flintshire 5:Billingham 1 within a minute Flintshires Davies added another to the Flintshire Total .. Flintshires Paul Richardson collected a 4 minute tripping/unsportsman conduct penalty at 46:02. The Freeze again punished Billingham with their second short handed goal at 46:34 scored by Pete Foundes assist Phil Brook to make it 7-1. Flintshires Davies sat for 2 minutes slashing at 47:57 .Billingham finally answered back at with a goal from John Aisbett assisted by Andrew Payne Gary Dowd then scored unassisted for Billingham at 51:47 to narrow the lead to 7-3 , within a minute Flintshire had picked up another penalty , Jason Titmuss 2 minutes for Roughing . At 53:25 Billingham cut Flintshires lead to 3 goals with an unassisted power play goal scored by Tom Brown.Flintshire were never to be caught they added a further three goals to their tally and goal No 10 being another short handed goal.
Not a good start to the season , Ian Richardson said after the game ,"we are unfit , we have not had the opportunity to train , they simply out stayed us ".The warm up before the match was the first time the Eagles have practiced together this season .It is hoped that training sessions will commence this week.
