BILLINGHAM EAGLES V SUNDERLAND CHIEFS
ED1 NORTH
8th JANUARY 2000

Saturday 8th January saw the Eagles open their campaign for the year 2000 from a position of strength, five points clear at the top of ED1. The players fans and officials of the Sunderland Chiefs made a short journey south for the opening ED1 north game of the year.Eagles were without the support and line depth of some of the younger players who were on u-19 duties sealing their own league title.

1st Period

The first period opened with dissapointment for Eagles blue liner Ian Richardson when his shot from the point was disallowed for a man in the crease infringement. Sunderland went short handed at 2:35 with a 2 minute bench penalty for too many men on the ice. Eagles capitilised on the power play when a well timed pass from Tom Brown was collected by Brian Perry who was moving through the slot, Brian picked his moment to shoot home the Eagles first goal for 2000 assisted by Paul Winndridge and Tom Brown. Eagles found themselves short handed at 5:04 when Simon Burns sat for a 2 minute delay game penalty. Eagles played the penlty off without loss.Sunderland put a nice move together that began behind the Eagles net resulting in a close range shot that was stopped by the lightening reactions and acrobatics of Eagles net minder Adam Flett who spread himself low to block the shot. Eagles again went short handed at 8:08 when Martin Lewis collected a 2 min interference penalty, again this was played off without loss. Another penalty , Tom Brown 2 min unsportsman conduct gave Chiefs another power play which allowed them to open their account with a goal scored by Chris Earle assisted by Andy Robinson to make it level pegging at one goal each. Tom Brown edged the Eagles in front when after recieving the puck in the Sunderland slot with his back to the goal he turned releasing his shot as he span that beat the keeper high. The first closed with the Eagles picking up a 2 minute slashing penalty at the close of the period. Eagles 2 : Chiefs 1.

2nd Period

Eagles again went short handed at 24:29 when Andy Fletcher picked up a 2 minute Slashing penalty this was played off without any loss. Eagles got their third a power play goal when Tom Brown launched a slap shot that was not going to be stopped at 33:41 assisted by Paul Winndridge . Tom Brown hit his hat trick goal at 37:59 when he removed the puck from the end of a Sunderland stick to blast home assisted by Paul Winndridge and Brian Perry. The second closed Eagles 4 : Chiefs 1 .

3rd Period

The third opened with Eagles hitting a purple patch !! 4 goals in under 2 minutes. Simon Hehir started with a shot low between the Chiefs keepers pads assisted by Martin Lewis and Richie Thornton , five seconds later saw Tom Brown going one on one with the Chiefs goalie Tom got his fourth of the night with a shot to the top right of the goal , assisted by Martin Lewis , 36 seconds later saw Martin Lewis in a one on one with the Chiefs goalie, Martin chose to lift the puck to score assisted by Tom Brown. Fifty seven seconds on saw Liam Thompson lift the Eagles tally to 8 goals with assists from Dale Taylor and Si Burns. At 46:04 Chiefs Michael Bowman slotted home unassisted to reduce the Sunderland defeceit to six goals. Eagles made it nine at 48 minutes when Gary Dowd blasted home a rebound shot assisted by Brian Perry and Andy Fletcher. With the match beyond doubt the Chiefs netted a short handed goal to close the game Eagles 9 : Chiefs 3.
