BILLINGHAM EAGLES V SUNDERLAND CHIEFS

ENHL LEAGUE GAME

9th December 2000

 

Saturday 9th December saw the Eagles playing the second game in 7 days against local rivals Sunderland Cheifs who would be looking to avenge last weeks English cup defeat. Eagles were again without injured Stephen Wallace and a number of younger players Tom Griffiths , Scott Ward , Phillip Pritchard , David Flett. Taking the position in the pipes following the departure of Adam Flett was young Wes Fawthrop.

1st Period

Fifteen seconds into the first saw Eagles Gareth Crinnion commence the scoring assisted by Simon Hehir and Brian Perry just over a minute later the Eagles again found the spot when Andy Fletcher scored assisted by Paul Winndridge and Tom Brown, I am informed that the assist on this goal gave Spike his 550th League point. There was no stopping the high flying Eagles when Gary Dowd gave them their third unaswered goal in 2 minutes and twenty seconds assisted by Brian Perry and Simon Hehir. A minute later the Eagles applied even more prressure when Martin Lewis scored assisted by Gary Dowd. Cheifs went short handed at 5:33 when Andy Muff picked up a 2 minute interference penalty.Eagles found themselves a man down at 6:16 when Simon Hehir took a 2 minute roughing call, the penalty was played off without loss. The runaway Eagles made it 5 when at 11:11 Tom Brown scored assisted by Paul Windridge and Ritchie Thornton. Eagles Andy Fletcher sat for 2 minutes when called for a Roughing penalty at 16:15, again played off without loss. The Eagles put the game beyond Sunderland at 19:56 when they scored their sixth an even handed goal scored unassisted by Andre Malo.

 

 

2nd Period

Cheifs changed net minder for the second, in goal was Chris Mckay to replace Ian Hanson .The second opened with Cheifs Chris Mcay picking up a 2 minute tripping penalty, the Eagles used the power play to good effect making it seven unanswered goals at 22:50 when Brian Perry scored assisted by Gary Dowd and Simon Hehir.Some sterling work from Wes Fawthrop was keeping the Cheifs at bay. Cheifs Tim Mckay picked up a 2 + 10 for cross checking from behind at 23:22. Cheifs finally broke the deadlock and Wes`s shut out at 37:05 when Tim Mckay netted un assisted.The second closed Eagles 7 : Cheifs 1.

3rd Period

Only one minute and forty seven seconds into the third saw Eagles Tom Brown get his second of the night assisted by Andy Fletcher and Paul Winndridge. A rash of Eagles penaltys followed, Andy Fletcher 2 min holding stick, Martin Lewis 2 min slashing, then at 48:12 only seconds after returning to the ice Martin Lewis got his second of the night assisted by Simon Hehir. As play resumed Paul Windridge was called for a 2 minute tripping penalty. Tom Brown sealed his hat trick at 53;15 assisted by Paul Windridge and David Flett. Co-incidental penaltys were called at 53:42 for Eagles Tom Brown and Cheifs Kevin Musther.At 56:01 another hat trick was sealed when Martin Lewis scored assisted by Tom Brown and Paul Windridge. The last minutes of the game saw another 2 unsportsman like conduct calls go against the Eagles with Gareth Crinnion and Brian Perry collecting 2 minutes each. The game closed a very one sided Billingham Eagles 11: Sunderland Cheifs 1.
