GRIMSBY BUFFALOES V BILLINGHAM EAGLES

ENHL NORTH GAME

29th September 2001

Saturday the 29th September put the Eagles on the road to the Grimsby Buffaloes. Eagles were without numerous seniors including Martin Lewis. However on a brighter note they welcomed Paul Windridge back into the team.

The Eagles were again relying on the worthy services of younger players from within the club to play at Senior level

The rink at Grimsby can be a great leveller, its small size can be disorientating and allows worthy shots from almost any part of the rink.

Game Summary

The Buffaloes drew first blood at 6:57 when they took the lead with an even handed goal, Eagles were quick to reply with a goal from Andrew Payne under 2 minutes later, another 2 minutes of play saw the Buffaloes edge ahead with a goal from Adam Smith. At 16:19 the Buffaloes increased their lead with a shorth handed goal scored by Luke Green assisted by Daly Jenkins and Carl Wood.

With the Eagles facing some hard work they returned to the second period, after picking up a couple of 2 minute penaltys in the first five minutes they halted Grimsbys advance and then at 27:44 they reduced Grimsbys lead with a short handed goal scored by Paul Windridge assisted by Dale Taylor and Andy Fletcher. Then at 31:49 with a power play the Eagles then tied the game at 3 goals each when Andy Thornton hit the mark assisted by Paul Windridge and Andy Fletcher. The second closed all square.

The third period opened and this could have been either sides game, the deadlock was broken at 47:14 when Grimsby got their second short handed goal of the night scored unassisted by Luke Green, just over a minute later the Eagles again tied the game as Paul Windridge hit his second assisted by Andy Fletcher and Andrew Payne. However the Buffaloes were still charging and they were rewarded with the go ahead goal at 52:03 when Carl Wood netted unassisted

With the clock counting down the Eagles had to try and tie the game to salvage some points, Coach Andre Malo made his call and pulled the keeper, even though the Eagles were unable to get the goal it is to the credit of the young defence players that Grimsby did not score during the time the Eagles played without a keeper, especially taking into account the very small size of the rink.
