Sunday 3rd September saw the Eagles take the tripo north to face the Whitley Warriors, vengence was required for Whitley denying the Eagles the double last season.Andre Malo made his return in a Billingham shirt as he took his position as player coach.
1st Period
Warriors picked up the first penalty of the game when Stuart Lonsdale collected a 2 minute interference penalty . Eagles quickly punished the Warriors when Gary Dowd passed from the Eagles Blue line to captain Paul Winndridge who put Stephen Wallace through to beat Wall one on one with 2:57 gone.Penalty trouble came again at 6.:21 for the Warriors when Mark Brown collected a 2 minute high stick penalty. Eagles Simon Hehir picked up a 2 +2 + 2 for slashing , roughing and unsportsman like conduct, with Warriors Paul Willis also collecting a 2 minute unsportsman like conduct penalty. In a period dominated by penalty action Warriors Kevin Bucas collected a 2 minute elbows penalty when he mixed it with new player coach Andre Malo. Without any further goals being forth coming in the first it was again the referee and linesmen that were kept busy with penaltys from both sides, Eagles Scott Ward picked up a 2 minute trippong penalty at 17:08, Warriors Paul Willis and Eagle Brian Perry collected 2 minutes Unsportsman like conduct penaltys. Although the first finnished with Eagles up 1 it was a good example of three line hockey.
2nd Period
BAgain the penaltys flowed with Daniel Ord for the Warriors collecting a 2 + 2 for roughing and cross check along with Eagles Scott Ward, 2 minutes cross check at 21:47. under half a minute later Warriors Mark Brown took a two minute sit for interference at 22:26.Warriors Bobby Bradley picked up a 2 minute interference penalty at 27:38 and then at 28:59 Warriors and Eagles picked up a 2 minute penalty each with Lee Baxter for Slashing and Eagles Andy Fletcher for roughing. The goal famine was ended at 29:38 when Martin Lewis finnished a top move instigated when Andre Malo passed to Stephen Wallace who went from one end of the rink to the other to put a pass that was tipped in by Martin Lewis, protests from Warriors were over ruled and the goal stood. Eagles Gareth Crinnion was called for a hokking penalty at 33:33. Eagles next collected a 2 minute penalty for holding the stick at 35:47. Eagles extended their unanswered lead when Richie Thornton raced the length of the ice to supply Paul Winndridge who hit it into the goal mouth where it deflected into the net to give Eagles their third and a short handed goal. Warriors Kevin Bucas collected a 5 minute hooking penaltyth at displayed a similarity to butt ending and floored Eagles Andy Fletcher and also caused the second to finnish with 1:18 remaining. The second closed Warriors 0 : Eagles 3.
3rd Period
In to the third period and Warriors Mark Brown picked up a 2 minute penalty for holding at 42:12. Eagles made it 4 when Stephen Wallace picked up the puck in the right hand corner and held on to it to square a pass to Andre Malo who placed the puck to Richie Thornton to shoot home.at 43:29.Eagles made it 5 when Andre Malo skated rings around the Warriors to pass to Paul Winndridge who hit a one timer at 45:36.Warriors changed net minders at 45:59.Penaltys again became the main activity with Warriors Daniel Ord collecting a 2 + 2 for hooking and slashing at 46 :31, and Eagles Stephen Wallace sitting for 2 minutes for holding also timed at 46:31. Three minutes later Eagles captain Paul Winndridge picked up a 2 minute hooking penalty. A scuffle broke out between Eagles Scott Ward and Whitleys Scott Taylor, Scott Ward collected a 5 +10 for holding the facemask and Whitleys Scott Taylor ( instigator ) received a 2 min roughing 5 + 10 for holding the facemask and a 10 minute misconduct penalty, all penalties timed at 50:08. In the following 5 minutes Eagles and Warriors both traded 5 minute interference penaltys. With under 5 minutes left to play the Warriors broke their duck when Andrew Carter and Lonsdale found themselves on a 2 on 1 breakaway and Carter found the back of the Eagles net.
An entertaining game where the Eagles never looked pushed. If the Warriors want to make up for the departure of Simon Leech they should apply the amount of attention given to hitting and taking the player out, to their skating and stick handling skills.
