ENGLISH CUP GAME
9th September 2001
Sunday the 9th September put the Eagles on the road to Altrincham for their opening game of the season.
The Eagles bench welcomed a lot of new faces eager to prove their commitment and drive for coach Andre Malo.
Eagles were without, Ian Richardson, Brian Perry. They also missed Simon Burns who although registered is rumoured to have retired. This coupled with the closed season moves meant that the Eagles were a younger side than last season. Eagles starting line up consisted of Captain Andy Fletcher, Ass Captain Martin Lewis, Ricky Hall (n/m), Graham Harrison Ass Captain, Andrew Payne and David Flett.
The Aces had a mainly unchanged team with a lot of experienced and familiar names.
Game Summary
The Aces were first of the mark with an unassisted goal scored at 7:07 by Paul Fleury, Eagles levelled the scoring at 14:42 when Andy Fletcher hit home assisted by Martin Lewis and David Flett. Two minutes later the Aces edged ahead with an even handed goal scored by Alan Gemmell with assissts to Aarron Richardson and Tim Dempsey.
Into the second period again the Aces drew first blood when Craig Sharman netted a short handed goal assisted by Simon Mills and net minder Phill Verstappen to makeit Aces 3, Eagles 1. However that lead was cut in the last minute of the second when Martin Lewis scored an even handed goal assisted by Andrew Payne and Graham Harrison.
A minute into the third the scoring action was completed when Aces Greg Symons stretched their lead assisted by Alan Gemmel. The final score was Altrincham Aces 4 : Billingham Eagles 2.
