Black History Month - The Romans

English Royal Family

A consort of George VI of England, Queen Charlotte Sophia, was a German princess was of African descent. She is the grandmother of Queen Victoria and there is a portrait in the British museum of her by Thomas Frye (1719-1762). Elizabeth, child of Eward IV had Moors in her family like Court More and Court Morienne.

In 1504 Queen Margaret of Scotland had two Moor maids-of-honor, they were baptized Elen & Margaret More. Her husband King James had Negro minstrels in the Scottish court; one was named Peter the Moryen or Moor.

In books like the Doomsday (which Willam the Conqueror had made in 1085-6), Africans have name such as Moors or derivatives of More as Morirton, Moretania, Blackamoor. This mean that Africans were here in Europe but used European names. This was due to them being baptized into the church. There were Africans in Scotland, notably in Edinburgh around 1500.One of the Great Poets Willam Dunbar wrote a poem about black woman called Landart Furth of the last Schippis.
