When we first published the picture on the right, we could find no trace that the American Forces on the Western Front deployed cavalry, however this picture appeared to contradicted this. We asked the Internet community for your comments.
Christopher Fischer emailed to say "Your reports are right, US Horse Cavalry WAS deployed in France. Troops B, D, F, & H of the 2nd US Cavalry Regiment served as the "Provisional Cavalry Squadron" during both the St. Mihel and Meuse-Argonne offensives.
Troop I of the Second had done some patrol work during the summer of 1918.
I have first hand accounts, original orders, after action reports, etc. and a person whose grandfather served in H-Troop is sending copies of his records.
I even have documented proof that the "PCS" was the first US troops to use the Browning Automatic Rifle in combat. Furthermore, F-Troop is credited with knocking out two German machine gun's and capturing a battery of heavy Artillery".
www.militaryhorse.org sent us the picture on the right. Mac tells us "Recently found another unusual picture of US trooper in France during W.W.I - didn't know exactly why this one appealed to me but it became apparent when I received it.
It's not often you find an American cavalryman wearing the overseas cap and leg wraps. The real photo card is marked on the back with name - 'Sgt. John Cunningham'".
