No individual, faced with the vast amount of suffering in the world, can hope to make a great impression upon it, and in many cases this feeling of futility stops them from making any contribution at all. But if they each concentrated upon only one good cause, of their own choice, they would then see that - Our favorite charity, is Myton Hamlet Hospice. One reason we chose this, is because it is local to us, which makes it easier to relate to, and the other is the sheer magnificence of the work they carry out, in a loving and totally dedicated manner. The mental as well as the physical strain that the staff contend with, whilst still giving comfort and support to each patient, deserves all our praise. The term 'Hospice' dates back to medieval times, when they were used by sick and travel weary pilgrims, returning from their wanderings, and later, crusaders wounded in battle were tended there. The hospices as we know them today, were originated in the 1960's by Dr. Cicely Saunders, when she opened St Christopher's Hospice near London. She placed great emphasis upon pain control techniques, combined with compassionate care for the terminally ill, allowing them to die pain free, and with dignity. Myton Hamlet Hospice was opened in 1982 and is still expanding it's provision of extensive in-patient care for the terminally ill. The Hospice is situated in the heart of Warwickshire, two miles from the town centres of Warwick and Royal Leamington Spa, and 12 miles from Coventry. In April 1997 they opened The Cedars, a 24
bed in-patient care unit which further enhanced their facilities and
the specialist palliative care provided. In Autumn 1999 they opened
their new Hollies Day Hospice. The stated aims of the Hospice are - "To enhance the quality of life in whatever way possible, and acceptable to the patient; to support both patient and family at all times; and if death does occur, to ensure it is peaceful and with dignity". Myton Hamlet Hospice is a registered charity, and depends upon public donations. They make no charges to patients for care at the hospice, and need to receive over £2,500,000. a year just to continue at the present level.
