Coat of Arms - Robert Dudley Earl of Leycester

Warwick Castle

Coat of Arms - Warwick

Warwick Castle is one of the most beautiful and complete castles in England, built in 1068 on the orders of William I (William the Conqueror), it replaced the various fortifications that had stood on that site since 700 AD, protecting the inhabitants of what was then no more than a settlement, from the marauding Danes.

In Anglo-Saxon times Warwick became incorporated into the kingdoms of both Wessex and then Mercia. In 1088 it became an English Earldom, and was held by a succession of families such as the Beauchamps, Nevilles, Plantagenets, Dudleys, and since 1759., the Grevilles. Most notable of the Nevilles being Richard, known as the Kingmaker. His support for the Yorkist Edward IV, made him so powerful that Warwick virtually ruled the kingdom until 1464.

Other families who live in Warwick include the Johnson's and the Rouse's, not as well known, but nonetheless important.

If you would like further information about Warwick, Royal Leamington Spa, Kenilworth, and Stratford-upon-Avon, together with pictures of buildings of interest, please visit 'Bob's Mavica Photo Gallery' at

It is still in the process of being compiled - I haven't got around to all the Stratford-upon-Avon buildings yet - but there is still plenty of information and pictures on there, and well worth a visit.
