VICTORIAN
CARDS
On 24 May 1819, in Kensington
Palace, Edward Duke of Kent and Duchess Victory Louise Saxe-Coburg’s
one and only daughter Victory was born. Coronation took place 20 June
1837, Victory was 18 year old when became the Queen of United Kingdom
of Great Britain and Ireland. The following years of her reign is the
greatest time of the British Empire.
The times when Queen Victoria reigned (1837-1901) was called from her
name Victorian. At that time a new characteristic style was developed.
The strongest stamp of the Victorian style was left in architecture,
but another disciplines such as beautiful porcelain cups, were under
its influence too.

One of many legacies of those times are splendid cards used then.
Initially they were without any ornaments and had only the basic
information, like the name of the owner, on them.
Afterwards, first ornaments appeared.

Victorian cards were often decorated by an image of their owner.

Undoubtedly, the most frequently used patterns of that age were cards
containing flowers

and plants.

Another recurring design showed a hand holding, tending or arranging
flowers.

Cards showing the images of animals at the background of picturesque
landscape were very popular too.

As well as nature images,

cards were often decorated by scenes of playing children.

collection.
