Plymouth's pyramid

A Pyramid of Shoes was built at the premises of the Avon Fire and Rescue Services at Temple Back, Bristol on 31 October 2006

The aim was to raise awareness of land mine casualties with each shoe symbolising a limb lost to Cluster Bombs and Landmines. The project received recognition at the International Soroptimist Convention in Glasgow, August 2007.

The event was publicised in local schools and  the general public took part, and we built an enormous pyramid. Afterwards the shoes were donated to a third world charity or recycled.

Our programme for 2007 - 2008 includes:

     Mock interviews at local schools

Continuing support for a women's refuge

Music for a Summer Evening - a fund raising concert for this year's charity, the Princess Royal Trust for Carers

Collecting for Lord Mayor's Appeal after a performance of "The Messiah"

A light-hearted talk - "Books behind bars" - prisoners are a captive audience!

We do not neglect the fun and friendship of Soroptimism and this is reflected in our programme and in other informal occasions.
