The Carington Arms, Ashby Folville
The Carington Arms dates from the late 18th century and was originally known as the Royal Oak. It was a single storey thatched roof inn and was enlarged in 1880 and again in 1969.
In the domesday book of 1086, the village was called Ascebi (Danish for the place of the ash tree). The Folville was added about 1200 when the family of that name settled in the village and were Lords of the Manor until 1363 when the male line became extinct.
The Woodfords were then the Lords until 1516, followed by the Mortons. A Morton daughter married Sir John Smith (formerly Carington) in 1563 and the descendants of that family still own the estate. Tombs and monuments of the family are in the local church.
