This former 'alehouse' lies to the rear of the War Memorial. In 1833 it was known as 'The Three Magpies,' and the landlord was Joseph Morrell, but in 1852 it bore the sign 'Old White Swan,' with J. Hill the licensee. The last landlord was Mr. J. W. Foers in 1894. It is now divided into three dwellings, but it is still referred to as Swan Cottages.
CONSTABLES ACCOUNTS 1803 To making a return of public houses, and men and horses they can accomodate 1 0 In 1833 the local 'alehouse' was named "The Three Magpies", (later to be renamed "The White Swan"), situate on Cock Holme, behind the War Memorial. There is a reference of 1783 referring to 'work done on Catcliffe Bridge', and 'Martha Boler for ale'. Also see back to 1789 entry in Churchwardens Accounts where she is referred to as a provider of ale. Incidentally, Martha's sister Ann married a George Blagden, who built Washford Bridge over the River Sheaf at Salmon Pastures, Attercliffe Road, Sheffield, in the year 1794.
