The 1965 model has completely new styling from the earlier Thunderbirds. With a choice of Hardtop, Landau and Convertible. This model challenged both the Buick Rivera and the Pontiac Grand Prix.

A restyled 'flight deck' instrument panel was one of the big selling points. The instruments were mounted in seperate pods and illuminated by soft green lighting. Another feature was the all new wrap around lounge style rear seats with a fold down centre arm rest with built in speaker. The swing away steering wheel became standard.

Disc brakes on the front wheels greatly improved the stopping distance. Sequential tail lights were standard. The front indicators were mounted above each wing. 1965 saw the introduction of the first keyless locking system, with a double-sided key, now common on cars 35 years later
First owned 12 days after completion by Newman Wolf, of the Navel Air Station at Miramar, San Diego, Southern California. [This was the original training base for Top Gun Pilots who now fly B2 Bombers] The only other available recorded American owner was a Norma Vondollen, who lived in the Dutch community of Solvang, north of Los Angeles, USA, in February 1991

This Thunderbird was part of a consignment purchased by Peter Chaplin of Nottingham, England in July 1991 from Condor Classics of Los Angeles, California. It was shipped to the King George V Docks in Hull and then onto Chatham Docks in Kent, where it was passed through HM Customs in September 1991. It is understood that the car was kept in a barn for several years. Then bought by Robert Carpenter of Ilkeston Derbyshire, who owned it until September 1996, when it was purchased by David Martin of Coventry.

Diane McBride purchased the Thunderbird in March 1998, and gave her the nickname 'Sioux', in honour of one of that nation's native American Indian tribes, and the mythilogical association with the 'BIRD OF THUNDER', from whom the car derived it's original name. Sioux has won numerous rewards, including the Ford International Silver Salver at Donnington Park, Elsie Pinks Memorial Shield, Best Thunderbird at Billing Aquadrome in 1998; Top American Car - Ragley Hall in 1999; John Cox Memorial Shield at Newark in 2000 & 2001; Ford Motors Challenge Cup at Newark, All Ford Rally Thunderbird Cup at Abingdon in 2000. Also selected to appear at the prestigious International Classic Car Show, NEC in Birmingham, 1999.
