Welcome to the new Cappella website  ...

Welcome to the Cappella Home Page.

Take a look at What's New in our web.

Cappella is a mixed-voice choir, with approx. 47 members, based at Ely House in central Dublin, some of the members have been singing together for a decade or more.

Cappella’s present formation dates from January 1998 when Vincent Whelan commenced as Musical Director.  Since then, competitive achievements have included a 1st in the Gospel Style competition at the New Ross Choral Festival in May 1998 and in April of 1999, winners of the overall first prize at the Michael Van Dessel Choral Festival in Dundalk.  Vincent Whelan was also awarded a much deserved medal for best conductor.

The Choir was also awarded prizes at Festivals in Arklow and Navan during the season and competed in the "Choir of the Year" competition, sponsored by Boyne Valley Honey, at Navan Choral Festival in May 1999, having been nominated by Dundalk Choral Festival.

On November 12th last Cappella travelled to Llandudno, to compete in the Stena Line sponsored North Wales Choral Festival.   The choir was placed 4th in the mixed voice section, out of an entry of 13 excellent choirs, seven of which were Irish.   This was Cappella's first time to travel abroad and it was a most enjoyable experience.

The highlight of 1999 for Cappella was an appearance at Dublin's Olympia Theatre on June 10th, where the choir had the pleasure of joining The Chieftains in performing a six-part suite, based on their Grammy-winning Long Journey Home album.

The choristers enjoy a varied repertoire, performing at fundraising events  and for pleasure as well as in competition.  Cappella’s performance at the Festival of Song in Drogheda last February has earned a return invitation for this year.  In March the choir played a big part in helping to raise over £3,500, in aid of the SVP Society, by participating at a concert in St. Peter's Church, Phibsborough.   The Society has decided to make this an annual event and an invitation has been extended to Cappella to perform again on March 25th 2000.

In December, Aer Rianta invited the choir to take part in their Christmas programme at Dublin Airport.   On Thursday 23rd December, Cappella sang "Christmas Carols" for charity in the Arrivals Hall.   The Airport was exciting and hectic during the Christmas period and the choir's participation in the musical activities added to the seasonal athmosphere.

CAPPELLA is always open to welcome potential new members, particularly male voices, who may come to a rehearsal or two, to sample the sound and experience.   Sight reading is an advantage, but not essential.
