ECHO
BAIT

Carp fishing baits come in many forms, from the simple natural food such as worms, larger insects, slugs, snails , freshwater & sea molluscs, vegetables, seeds and beans to a multitude of man made products.

It is fair to say that most carp fishing of yesteryear was conducted with the naturally derived products which were reasonably easy to obtain.

Man made food sources where also frequently used to catch fish such as bread, cheese, Animal food, processed meats & pastes, fish products and are still used extensively today.

Early Carp fishers used all the above and included the forerunner to the modern boiled bait for their fishing in the form of cooked potatoes, which was highly successful and had the great advantage of being easy to “free line” with no additional weight for casting required, lasted well on the hook and more importantly the carp loved them.

Current carp fishing baits tend to rely on blended mixtures of animal or food ingredients commonly bound together and used either as a paste or a boiled bait ( herein called the boilie).

Boiled baits come in a vast array of different formats from the predominant HNV milk protein ( which is mainly derived from milk by-products) , Fish meal based ( predominance of blended types of meal including shellfish) , Bird food ( many types of bird feeding ingredients based on ground seed with added egg, spices and vitamins and minerals) simple Semolina/Soya blend or a combination of two or more of the above. Recent developments by the like of Mainline, Nash, Nutrabaits, Richworths also use a proportion of vegetable based products which are active based and release Amino acids which are highly attractive to fish.

With the vast choice available from the tackle shops, manufacturers and ingredient suppliers details of all varients would go on & on & on for pages on this site.

So for the boilies you can purchase from the tackle shops , they come in either frozen (fresh) or shelf life (preserved). These are flavoured from the manufacturer in sweet , savoury, with or with out added sweetners or taste enhancers.

The current vogue baits tend to come from: Mainline ( NRG, Active 8, Grange),

Nutrabaits (Trigga), Nash Bait (Whisky, Formula One), Essential (Shellfish B5), Solar (Club Mix).

Other Excellent Fresh baits come direct from the suppliers : Premier, Tails Up, Carp Company ( of which I am currently using one , but I am not telling you !!!!!).

Or you can make your own. Coming soon a new page showing step by step instructions to make your own bait via individual ingredients and the cooking process.

Perhaps one of the cheapest and most readily available carp baits is cooked particle.

Hemp, Tares, Maples, Groats, Maize, Rice, Sweet Corn, Wheat, Pinto Beans, Haricot Beans, Black eyed Beans, Kidney Beans, Soya Beans, Dal, Sunflower seeds,Chickpeas, Peanuts, Tiger Nuts, Brazil Nuts etc etc.

Most are obtainable from either supermarkets, Farm shops, Animal feed suppliers.

The main thing with particles is the need to soak the grains for up-to 24 hours prior to cooking. Cooking times will vary from 5 minutes for rice or groats to 45 minutes for nuts and maize.

One of my favourite blends for particle as a groundbait ( Spod) is 70% Hemp, 10% mini-Maple, 10% cut Maize, 5% Sweetcorn and the balance in either Tigers (Growlers) or Peanuts. This mix holds well in the spod without spilling much of the contents on “ The big chuck” , has differing particle sizes so that the fish have to amend their sucking of the particle, does not preoccupy them with one type of food source, and providing you leave the particle in the Hemp & Maize cooking water prior to using everything gets covered in the oils and sugars released increasing the attractiveness.
