SIDNEY JAMES

Sidney Joel Cohen was born on 6th May 1913 in Johannesburg. He moved to England at the age of 33 and after six weeks had got
himself in a job in his first film entitled Black Memeory.

Sid James really entered the public eye by appearing in the infamous Ealing comedy The Lavender Hill Mob with Alec Guinness
and Stanley Holloway. He then moved to working opposite Hancock on radio and TV and finally landed himself a part in Carry
On Constable (1960), the fourth in the series. He remained with them until 1974 where he left after Carry On Dick, the 26th
in the series. He also made TV shows like George and the Dragon, Citizen James and, most famously, Bless This House. Sid collapsed
on stage on 26th April 1976 performing a farce called The Mating Game in Sunderland. He was 62. He is now regarded as the
head of the Carry On gang, after appearing in 19 out of 30.

CHARLES HAWTREY

Charles Hawtrey was born George Frederick Joffree Hawtree in Hounslow on 30th November 1914. He made his big name starring
in an ITV comedy show in the lat fifties calle The Army Game. His talent was recognised by producer Peter Rogers and he went
to make 23 Carry On films- starting with the first, Carry On Sergeant and ending in Carry On Abroad 1972. Charles was forced
to leave the series due to alcoholicism. He was always found of drink but it had gone too far. His last role in Carry On Abroad
is Mr Tuttle where he is posed as a drunk. It was his swansong. The series never was quite the same.

Charles was a grat contributor to the films and always made me smile whenever he came on. He was very favourite comedian of
the lot. Sadly, as he got older his drinking grew worse and he was forced to retire. His leg became skeptic but he wouldn't
have it amputated saying 'I'd rather die with my boots on!' He passed away in a Nursing Home in Kent on 27th Octover 1988.
He was 73.
