Bellingham, Northumberland. Bellingham - A small attractive stone built village, which is the gateway to Kielder Water and forest. It lies just on the edge of the National Park. It is steeped in history and its church, St Cuthberts, shows what a wild harsh place it would have been. It received its defensive features (stone vaulted nave and south transept roof) after 1603 when England and Scotland were united under one crown. It makes you wonder how scared the locals were of the Scots. Legend says twice they burned down the church, so it makes you realise what a frontier town it would have been. For a village with such a long history there are very few buildings that date back to before the 19th Century. Thankfully now it is a much more peaceful village with a lovely waterfall walk, which is featured on this site. |
