Wooler, Northumberland. Wooler is the largest town in the Glendale area, with a population of 1,868. In the 13th century Wooler was no more than a hamlet with a population of just 200. In the 17th century it became one of the four wealthiest towns in Northumberland (the others being Newcastle, Corbridge and Alnwick) due to its trading of sheep, cattle, corn and horses. The Glendale region is largely rural in character and its economy is heavily reliant on agriculture, particularly sheep farming. |
