History

The oldest known picture of the team dated 1906. Frank Sandell is sitting on the bench in the centre.

Chippingdale Cricket Club is Worthing’s oldest cricket club (if we disregard those with a geographical base), and in 1997 it celebrated its centenary. The club was founded in 1897 by Frank Sandell for the employees of his building firm.

The club was named after Mr Sandell’s house. However, too many a generation of local club cricketers, it has always been referred to as “Chipps”.

There remained a strong connection between the Sandell family and the club until the mid 1950’s, with both Mr Sandell and his son Fred being the club’s president for a combined total of 57 years.

The club has a history of long-serving officers, with there being only seven club presidents, and the same number of secretaries since the club was founded.

The club’s continued success is due in part to this strong tradition. The club has a number of long-serving players in its current teams.

The club’s longevity is more remarkable since it has never had its own ground, but instead plays on Worthing’s municipal parks.

In the Worthing's Sentinel (dated March 15th 2004) there was a little piece in the 'Did you know?' section. It said, that in the year 1915: "No less than 14 members of Worthing Chippingdale Cricket Club had by the seventh month of the Great War signed up to fight for King and and Country."
