Perhaps
lesser known by many, Chan Yiu Chi (1888-1965), was not only a skilled
martial artist but also a classical scholar and a practitioner of
traditional Chinese medicine who was never boastful of his kung fu
skill. Whilst staying with his father, Chan Koon Pak in Canton, he
endeavoured to spread the practice Choi Lee Fut. Yiu Chi frequently
received requests asking him to teach overseas in foreign counties;
where there were considerable Chinese communities. During his father's
latter years, Yiu Chi did accept at his father's request several posts,
as kung fu instructor in many schools, trade unions, sports clubs and
worker's associations. Chan Yiu Chi was also fair and just man. He kept
no martial arts secrets from his students. Any query was answered in
detail and he analysed kung fu as objectively as any scholar his equal.
Yiu Chi was also a practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine. It is
worth noting that as a practitioner of medicine, he never refused
consultation and only charged what the patients could afford to pay
