My Father Chui Cheung
Written by Sifu Chui Kwong Yuen
Three
month ago, we presented some self-defence hints with the umbrella. Since
then, we have received esquires from readers who wanted to know the
master in those demonstrations. So we called again on the man behind it
all Sifu Chui Kwong Yuen. Chui Kwong Yuen is the descendant of a very
famous kung fu personality of Huang Sing Choy Lee Fut School, Chui
Cheung. Chui Cheung was a well-known figure in Canton many years ago, he
had a very characteristic nickname of "Die-hard", and was the
second of four "Die-hards" of Canton. Sifu Chui personally
wrote us a short history of his father and the kung fu he mastered.
Chui Cheung, also nicknamed 'Gigantic Cheung,' first learnt kung fu from
Fung Sing Biu, a master of Hung Gar kung fu. Then he was further
instructed by Hung Tak Kong, of Choy Lee Fut. Later he received
instruction from Tong Shek of the Huang Sing School of Fatshan. He also
learnt pole techniques from Tse She, the top master of the pole in
county Nam Hoi, and mastered the technique of the Pak Kwa pole.
Afterwards he followed Tam Sam, founder of Pak Sing Choy Lee Fut.
At that time in the martial world of Canton, there were four kung fu
fighters who were nicknamed 'diehards'. My father was one of them,
nicknamed the "Second Diehard". The other three were the
"First Diehard" Wong Kai, nicknamed 'Diehard Kai", who
followed Lau Chung of Hung Sing Choy Lee Fut; the "Third
Diehard" Chan Dao, nicknamed "Diehard Dao", who followed
Chow Loong, founder of Chow Gar kung fu, and Tam Sam of Pak Sing Choy
Lee Fut. The "Fourth Diehard" was Sung Mau, nicknamed
"Diehard Mau". The foursome were sworn brothers.
At that time in Canton and Fatshan, the atmosphere of kung fu fighting
prevailed, and it was customary that a kung fu instructor be challenged,
in order to establish oneself in the martial world, one needed to have
genuine kung fu skill. My father put a great deal of effort in
establishing Choy Lee Fut kung fu. He defeated numerous well-known
instructors, and won over a hundred fights. The older generation might
have been aware of the reputation of Chui Cheung, his name was won by
his fists. After his marriage, he changed his ways and concentrated in
teaching the young. He set up kung fu schools in Canton and various
towns, in Canton alone there were over ten schools. Later he went to
Hong Kong, and taught at organisations such as trade unions, mutual aids
societies and the Kowloon Motor Bus Staff Association etc.
His followers amounted to over ten thousand. In his late age, the old
man frequently acted as a mediator to quell quarrels. His interventions
had averted many possible violent clashes. Although he has now passed
away for over ten years, his followers still adhere to his will and pass
his kung fu to the young, At present the followers who had set up
schools are Chan Chau, Yim Chuen, Tse Wing Bun, Tang Kim Fung and Lu
Lit. They inherited my father's will and manifested Choy Lee Fut kung
fu. I myself am overseeing the "Chiu Cheung Choy Lee Fut
Association," which is named after my father.
