AnnaNavarre All right, let's go. The terrorists are in a fighting retreat; a few have barricaded themselves inside Castle Clinton.

JCDenton Lead the way.

AnnaNavarre Our orders are to locate a barrel of Ambrosia they are hiding inside -- I will give you a schematic of the barrel. But first we will exterminate the NSF terrorists.

JCDenton Exterminate?

AnnaNavarre A precious opportunity we cannot neglect.

JCDenton What about the rest of the shipment?

AnnaNavarre That is your brother's assignment. You will take the subway to meet him in Hell's Kitchen, but first we should deal with Castle Clinton.

JCDenton Are we going in the front, or is there another way?

AnnaNavarre A secondary entrance would be useful, but I am aware of no such thing.

AnnaNavarre President Mead has declared a war emergency. Shoot to kill.

AnnaNavarre You have your orders.

AnnaNavarre No bean-bag shells like during a training exercise; real bullets tonight.

AnnaNavarre The Ambrosia is somewhere inside the Castle.

AnnaNavarre We must annihilate the NSF so that this does not happen again.

AnnaNavarre I can hold the entrance while you look for another way in.

AnnaNavarre Our orders are to stay here until the Ambrosia is secure.

UNATCOTroop We've got your back, Agent.

UNATCOTroop They won't get far if they try to escape.

UNATCOTroop We've got them pinned down.

UNATCOTroop Be careful. They've got assault guns.

UNATCOTroop We know the Ambrosia's in there somewhere.

ParkBum1 Our country 'tis of Thee, sweet land of Liberty. Of Thee I sing.

ParkBum1 Land where my fathers died! Land of the Pilgrim's pride! From every mountain side, let freedom ring!

ParkBum1 My native country, thee. Land of the noble free. Thy name I love.

ParkBum2 Look at that. Don't have nobody at the side entrance. NSF could just walk away.

ParkBum2 I call 'em the Flashlight Brigade. All they ever do is come out here and scare the birds, then I go back to sleep.

ParkBum2 They're scared. Just look at 'em. They aren't gonna budge a muscle.

ParkBum2 Guess the cops got what they wanted.

ParkBum2 No thanks to the NYPD. Bunch of do-nothings.

ParkBum2 I think the United Nations should just step in and take over security for the whole country. It would be much less corrupt that way.

The bum is kind of scared, just trying to be pleasant to the police, with whom he associates JC.

ParkBum3 Don't let me get in your way, officer.

ParkBum3 I'm right here if you need me.

ParkBum3 You guys are doing great. About time the cops cleaned up this park.

Josh I'm starving. Do you have anything to eat?

JCDenton You don't look that bad. Tell me what you know about the │NSF.

Josh They're gonna kill the top one percent and then split up the rich │people's money with everybody.

JCDenton Can you tell me anything specific?

Josh Go to hell.

¦Josh What is it, Mister? I'm really hungry.

JCDenton You don't look that bad. Tell me what you know about the │NSF.

¦Josh I knew it! Someday the NSF is going to win, and I'm going to │give them your description with your stupid shades, and they're going │to kick your ass!

¦Josh I hope you get stuck in the desert someday. And that you starve │to death.

Josh Leave me alone.

Josh I don't need your help.

JCDenton Sorry, I don't have any food.

Josh I could eat anything.

└┬JCDenton How about some soy food?

JCDenton All I have is a candy bar.

Josh It don't matter. I just need something in my stomach so I can fall asleep.

JCDenton Here you go. Do you have a place to stay?

Josh I sleep out on the dock where they unload the speedboats.

JCDenton Speedboats? Is that how the NSF get their supplies?

Josh I don't know. They're always coming in and out of the tunnel behind the soda machine.

JCDenton Interesting.

Josh I spy on them from the crates. The code is 9183.

JCDenton Clever boy.

Josh Thanks for the snack, mister.

JCDenton It's the least I could do.

Josh That was good.

Josh The cleaner-nanites make my teeth slippery.

Josh I wish everybody was as nice as you.

Billy You a cop?

JCDenton UNATCO agent. How does a little boy get mixed up with the NSF?

Billy I just wanted to find some food, but they didn't have any -- and then they started shooting at the police. Got some?

JCDenton Sorry, kid.

┌┴JCDenton Sorry, I don't have any food

Billy Aw, man.

└┬JCDenton Want this candy bar?

JCDenton You can have this soy food.

Billy You're cool.

JCDenton Glad I could help.

Billy Hey, I bet I can help you.

JCDenton Yeah?

Billy The soldiers have secret tunnels. They take boxes into the tunnel under the fort, but they never bring them back out.

JCDenton What kind of boxes?

Billy Steel. Big ones.

JCDenton Thanks. Maybe I'll check that out.

AlexJacobson You're inside the kiosk of Castle Clinton. The bulk of the NSF troops must have gone through here to get underground.

AlexJacobson Objective complete. Agent Navarre will describe your │next assignment and stay behind to protect the Ambrosia. Look for her │out front.

AlexJacobson Agent Navarre already found the Ambrosia and secured the area. Your orders are to proceed with the operation and Hell's Kitchen.

AnnaNavarre You were too gentle with the NSF, but I cannot complain. │You completed the objective. At least you are not a coward like Paul.

AnnaNavarre You are not afraid to kill; I am pleased. The last thing I would expect from the brother of Paul.

JCDenton You mechs might have copper-wiring to re-route your fear of │pain, but I've got nerves of steel.

AnnaNavarre You are not a mech. You do not know what it is like.

JCDenton What it's like to stand around revving your actuators while │the more advanced units complete the mission? No, thanks.

AnnaNavarre It was my error to believe that UNATCO's superweapon would │appreciate a chance to prove himself.

JCDenton Just give me the next objective.

│┌AnnaNavarre How dare I delay your search for glory. The NSF in the ││subway station have taken hostages. Free them, but you know our ││standing orders -- we do not make deals. Use this EMP grenade to ││disable the electronic detonators of the booby traps. Now we will ││see who is made of steel. I can take out a booby trap.

│└ AnnaNavarre How dare I delay your search for glory. You have │already dealt with the hostage situation in the subway, so take the │train to Hell's Kitchen and report to Paul. You can have the EMP │grenade I was going to issue you for the boobytraps on the subway-│station platform.

JCDenton I'm learning as I go.

AnnaNavarre You just passed Lesson One. Lesson Two is how we deal ¦with the terrorists in the subway station.

¦JCDenton I'm ready.

¦AnnaNavarre The terrorists have wired the platform with explosives ¦and put in hostages. Get the hostages out if you can, but make sure ¦the NSF learn that human shields will not work against UNATCO.

¦JCDenton Nothing we can't handle with a few EMP grenades.

¦AnnaNavarre We are thinking the same thought. I will equip you with ¦two grenades. They will disable any electronic detonators within a ¦radius of twenty meters.

¦

AnnaNavarre And you're learning fast, too. Lesson Two was supposed ──to be the subway station, but you took care of it already.

──JCDenton They had hostages down there.

──AnnaNavarre Good work. Next you must take the subway to Hell's ──Kitchen, where your brother Paul is in heavy fighting. You can have ──the EMP grenades I was going to give you for the boobytraps on the ──subway-station platform.

──JCDenton It's been a pleasure, Agent. I hope we can work together ──again.

AnnaNavarre I have located the barrel of Ambrosia myself.

AnnaNavarre We did not need your help after all.

AnnaNavarre Proceed with the operation in Hell's Kitchen. Try not to get in the way.

UNATCOTroop We'll take it from here.

UNATCOTroop We'll finish mopping up.

UNATCOTroop Save a few terrorists for us next time.

UNATCOTroop You better check out that hostage situation in the subway.

UNATCOTroop You better get to Hell's Kitchen. The fighting's pretty rough up there.

UNATCOTroop I'd like to know where the rest of the shipment went.

Veteran No, sir, forget about the NSF. Most of those old forts have a "bolt hole." Those boys'll be long gone out a side tunnel by now.

The long bark is kind of an experiment. The player can walk away at any time. According to Al, the text will vanish from the screen when the player gets out of hearing range.

Veteran I seen a lot of battles, blessed be our Lord, back in the Northwest War. Didn't have uniforms back then, just a shotgun and all the shells you could carry. The NSF sure has grown up, praise Heaven. They got organization now. Listen to me, young sir. I can tell you: that's what lost it for us last time, what the government's always been good at and we haven't. But it looks like the boys got some discipline this time around, and your men better take note. That's right. Stand up, wipe your noses, and take note. You got yourselves a -- hail Jesus! -- you got yourselves a rebellion!

Veteran You fellas might scare Jim and Jane Stay-at-Home, but that's an army out there, a praise-the-Lord yes an honest-to-God people's militia.

Veteran Consider the consequences, young sir.

Veteran Praise heaven! No more hiding below ground.

┌┴Veteran 'Bout time we had a battle face-to-face.

│┌Veteran Oh, it's horrible. Oh Lord-have-mercy why?

└┼Veteran Those were good boys, every last one of them.

Veteran That's what I mean when I say the goal is EXTERMINATION. ──They don't need people. They just want to have machines do it all ──and get rid of everybody they don't need, Mother-of-God.

The soldiers are engaged in a firefight with terrorists in a shanty town near a subway station. By the end of this stretch of barks, the player (or the other UNATCO troopers) has probably defeated most of the terrorists. The player's primary goal is to enter the subway station and save the hostages.

SubGuards They've moved into the shanty town.

SubGuards ... pretty tough pocket of resistance.

SubGuards We could use some help.

SubGuards They've got hostages in the subway station.

SubGuards We lost some of our men.

SubGuards The NSF seems to be falling back.

SubGuards Agent Navarre ordered us to secure this part of the park.

SubGuards See if you can get to the hostages.

SubGuards They've boopytrapped the subway platform. Said they would kill the hostages and themselves, too.

SubGuards There are a couple of ways into the place.

SubGuards Thanks for the help.

SubGuards ... just mopping up now.

SubGuards I think we can take it from here.

AlexJacobson The NSF terrorists in the subway have threatened to blow up the platform. Watch for boobytraps.

She's a prisoner of terrorists in the subway. There is probably fighting going on during these barks.

SubHostageFemale They've got us penned in.

SubHostageFemale What do I do?

SubHostageFemale Just take cover.

She can see other terrorists on the subway platform.

SubHostageFemale There's more of them!

This guy is a hostage in a subway station. There is probably a battle raging around him.

SubHostageMale Watch out!

SubHostageMale Thanks for the extra cash.

SubHostageMale I'll stay right here.
Calmer than " Watch out!"

SubHostageMale Watch out behind you.

JC is whispering, attempting a secret, stealthy hostage rescue.

SubHostageFemale What do I do?

JCDenton I'm with UNATCO. As soon as I open the train doors, I need you to be ready to run on board.

JC is whispering, attempting a secret, stealthy hostage rescue.

SubHostageMale Who are you?

JCDenton I'm a UNATCO agent. As soon as I open the train doors, I need you both to be ready to run on board.

SubHostageMale Okay

The player just rescued this guy from terrorists in the subway.

SubHostageMale Thanks!

SubHostageMale I think that's all of them.

SubHostageMale I'm not going anywhere until the shooting stops.

JCDenton You all right?

SubHostageMale I guess so.

JCDenton Why were the NSF holding the station?

SubHostageMale They were pulling out. Most of them got on the train and went up north.

JCDenton Were they transporting any heavy supplies? Barrels?

SubHostageMale Not that I saw, but I heard them talking about a warehouse, how they needed "every precious second" to move some kind of shipment.

JCDenton Precious, indeed. They just gave up a half-dozen lives for a couple of minutes.

SubHostageMale That's all I got.

The player just rescued this woman from terrorists in the subway. She's rather excited for the first few barks then settles down.

SubHostageFemale You saved my life!

SubHostageFemale They were going to blow the whole place up -- us -- them -- everything!

SubHostageFemale They're maniacs -- complete maniacs!

SubHostageFemale Funny, I thought the NSF was fighting for a good cause.

SubHostageFemale They're right that the government shouldn't intimidate people, but neither should they.

SubHostageFemale I guess they got what they deserved.

SubHostageFemale Thanks again. I think I'll be okay.

SubHostageFemale We'll stay in here.

SubHostageFemale I'll stay in here.

SubHostageFemale Thanks for the help.

AlexJacobson Good work. The hostages will be all right. Now get ¦back to Castle Clinton and help Agent Navarre locate the barrel of ┌┤Ambrosia.

│└AlexJacobson I don't believe what I just saw. Those were innocents; │you can't go in and just shoot everywhere. Get back to Castle │Clinton and help Agent Navarre locate the barrel of Ambrosia.

│┌AlexJacobson Good work. The hostages will be all right. Now take └┤the train to Hell's Kitchen and report to your brother.

AlexJacobson I don't believe what I just saw. Those were innocents; ──you can't go in and just shoot everywhere. Take the subway to Hell's ──Kitchen, and go talk to your brother.

AnnaNavarre Excellent work. I hear that every terrorist in the subway is flat on his back.

AnnaNavarre You are showing some promise.

AnnaNavarre Too bad you do not have cochlear implants like I do; you could listen for sonic transducers and not get your head blown off.

AnnaNavarre Your brother Paul has gotten our troops into another mess.

AnnaNavarre Paul has his units scattered and pinned down by heavy resistance in Hell's Kitchen.

AnnaNavarre The NSF regrouped in Hell's Kitchen perhaps because it is close to where they have taken the Ambrosia.

AnnaNavarre You have your orders.

AnnaNavarre You have done what you can for the hostages. Now report to your brother in Hell's Kitchen.

AnnaNavarre I will manage the situation in Battery Park.

AlexJacobson You'll be working with your brother Paul from here on out. Find him by the hotel for a briefing.

│┌PaulDenton JC, we have to talk. That hostage rescue was a disaster.

││JCDenton UNATCO policy is clear: no negotiation. You try for a ││rescue, and if it works, it works. I don't need you second-guessing ││me.

││PaulDenton Always follow policy, and you end up like Anna Navarre. ││Is that how you want to operate? Never mind. Right now you've got ││other things to worry about.

││

│└PaulDenton What are you doing here? You left a hostage situation in │Battery Park!

JCDentonI was pursuing the primary objective! I thought you needed │help with that EMP field.

PaulDenton Leave something like that to Anna, and civilians end up │dead. But forget about it. You don't have time to go back.

JCDenton What's the situation here?

PaulDenton You're taking over. I've got to get my team ready to raid the warehouse.

JCDenton What about the EMP field?

PaulDenton Still in place. Your primary objective will be to locate and disable its power source, probably an industrial-sized generator in a large building.

JCDenton I'll question some of the locals.

PaulDenton I ordered the civilians to take cover a block south of here in the free clinic and at the Underworld Tavern, down on the corner.

JCDenton Maybe I'll start with the tavern. Why'd you have to clear the street?

PaulDenton There's still a heavy NSF presence in the streets, and we're taking some fire. We could use your help if you get the chance.

JCDenton Maybe I'll do that.

PaulDenton If you need any extra equipment, here's the key to my place at the 'Ton Hotel. Check the secret closet. Remember? The keypad's behind the painting.

JCDenton Just like the movies. Second floor, right?

PaulDenton Yeah, and take a charger for the riot prod -- we don't need another Anna Navarre shooting spree.

JCDenton Whatever you say.

PaulDenton And, JC -- we'll be waiting for you to take down that EMP field.
JCDenton I'm carrying too much equipment. Hold on while I make room.

¦PaulDenton Ready, bro'?

│┌JCDenton I'm ready.

│└JCDenton Not yet.

PaulDenton Use reasonable force like you did on Liberty Island.

PaulDenton Use minimal force this time. You took a lot of lives on Liberty Island.

PaulDenton I've got to assemble my team.

PaulDenton You better get moving.

PaulDenton I'm counting on you to find that generator.

PaulDenton Good work -- the soldiers will take over now. My men are │in position, JC. We're counting on you to disable this EMP field. │Talk to the locals. The power source must be nearby.

PaulDenton Subdued, JC. I didn't say "dead." Forget the street-fighting. My men are in position, and we're counting on you to disable this EMP field. Talk to the locals. The power source must be nearby.

A hooker in a subway station.

Sally Yeah?
JCDenton How's it look on the street?

Sally How's what look?

JCDenton The fighting. Is it heavy?

Sally The cops told me to take cover in the bar or come down here. They've got the NSF surrounded in the 'Ton Hotel.

JCDenton Hostages?

Getting bored. The player's not a buyer.
Sally I don't know. Is that it?

JCDenton Yeah. Thanks.

Sally Yeah?

JCDenton We're looking for an illegal power generator in this area. Can you help me out?
Sally I mighta heard something. How much money you got? Fifty credits?

JCDenton Sure

Sally Appreciate the business. Yeah, I met this truck driver a while │back. He had a lot of cash. I asked him where he got it, and he told │me he'd just hauled power cables to a warehouse near here.

JCDenton Do you remember the name of the street?

Sally Didn't seem like a big deal at the time. You might try that │mech chick who runs the Underworld Bar. She grew up around here.

JCDenton That helps a little. Thanks.

¦Sally That's all I know.

Sally I'm just gonna wait it out.

Sally Maybe that guy on the steps knows what's going on.

Sally Hope you find the place.

Sally Jordan's big into cleaning up this place. She's real helpful │with the cops.

Sally The bar's down on the corner, near Smuggler's hideout.

Sally A secret power station -- I wouldn't be surprised.

Sally A lot of people in this part of town work for the NSF.

Sally I bet that NSF has a secret base or something in the warehouse │district.

JCDenton Forget it.

Her tone of voice indicates that she thinks the player is making a big ¦mistake.
¦Sally All right...

¦Sally Like I said: fifty credits. I'll tell you what you want to │know.

JCDenton I don't have that kind of money.

JCDenton The street's quieted down.

Sally I know. I'm waiting for a friend.

Sally Get lost.

AlexJacobson We're getting reports of a hostage situation in the 'Ton Hotel, which is at the southeast corner of the block. When you stayed with Paul, did you meet Mr. Renton and his daughter, Sandra? We think at least one of them is still inside.

MaleCop Talk to one of the guys in green. UNATCO's running the show today.

MaleCop We've been asked to direct pedestrians to the Underworld Bar. You'll be safe there.

MaleCop About time these thugs came out in the open.

MaleCop This is a job for military units, not city police.

MaleCop Stay clear of the fighting.

StreetBum1 Stay out the 'Ton, bro'. Bad shit goin' down.

StreetBum1 NSF got the whole building.

StreetBum1 Best thing, hide your piece and lay low. That's what I'm doin'.

StreetBum1 Cops stop you, bro', don't talk back. Tonight they just SHOOT your ass.

StreetBum2 Back off, man.

StreetBum2 What'd I do?

StreetBum2 I ain't bothering no one.

StreetBum3 This city is LIT UP, man! Yeah.

StreetBum3 They're setting fires on Wall Street; I heard it on the radio.

StreetBum3 This dies down, I'm gonna take myself a nice spread on Park Avenue.

StreetBum3 I've been waitin' for this.

This person is kind of scared and schizophrenic.

StreetBum4 They're shooting. Why do they keep shooting?

StreetBum4 Sometimes I hear things... in my head. It's not normal.

StreetBum4 Majestic... majestic...

JordanShea What can I get you?

│┌JCDenton You work here; you must know the area. Heard of an old ││warehouse with an illegal power generator?

││JordanShea Not exactly, but if you're looking for a warehouse, you ││should probably start in the warehouse district.

││

│└JCDenton You work here; you must know the area. Heard of anyone │hiding a large generator?

JordanShea Not exactly. But if it's anywhere, it's probably in the │warehouse district.

JCDenton Where's that?

│A few blocks south, not a bad walk, but the riot police have blocked │the roads because of the NSF.

JordanShea Well you may be out of luck. Even though one of the old │warehouses faces onto the park, I don't know how you'd get inside.

JCDenton Sounds like a good place to start.

JordanShea Something to drink? Everything in the bar, snacks too, │just ten credits.

│┌JCDenton That's some heavy augmentation.

││The "augmentation" issue really hits a nerve. Jordan is pissed-off ¦│and sarcastic at this point.

││JordanShea Yeah. Ex-UNATCO, what's it to you?

││JCDenton I'm in the business.

││JordanShea Well, I was in an early program, okay? I can still polish ││a glass. Good luck with your "business."

││

│├JCDenton I'm broke.

│├JCDenton No, thanks.

│└JCDenton Sure.

JordanShea What'll it be?

JordanShea The tap's out. Only bottles.

JordanShea Shoot.

JCDenton I'll take a candy bar.

JCDenton How 'bout a soda?

JCDenton A Beer please

JordanShea There you go.

JordanShea You better get rid of some gear if you want to carry │anything else.

¦JordanShea That's fine if the police have to ask some questions, but │don't terrorize my customers.

JordanShea Yes, Agent?
JordanShea You supposed to drink when you're on duty?

JCDenton Mind if I ask you a few questions?

Jock Hey, you look like the vigilante type. What if I said I knew where you could load up on military hardware?

JCDenton You mean that guy Smuggler across the street?

Jock Already know him, huh? Too bad. Hey, how about I tell you about │something you can't hear from anybody else.

JCDenton Where's that?

Jock That's valuable information. You'll have to come up with some kind of payment. How about liquor?

JCDenton Never mind.

JCDenton I don't have any liquor on me.

¦Jock The bar's to my left.
¦

¦┌JCDenton You can have this bottle of wine.

JCDenton You can have this bottle of liquor.

── JCDenton You can have this beer.

── Jock That one's warm. Get me something from the bartender.

── Jock I want one of Shea's ice-cold brown bullets. You too cheap to ──¦buy?

── Jock What am I? A bum? You think I'm gonna drink anything you find ───lying around?

Jock That'll do. His name's Smuggler. A real paranoid nut; wires himself in with boobytraps. But he knows things; there's stuff in the sewers that only Smuggler knows about.

JCDenton Thanks. Maybe I'll pay him a visit.

Jock Now I'll tell you something you can't hear from anybody but me.

JCDenton What’s That

Jock Area 51. You heard of it, right?

JCDenton Actually, I'd rather hear whether you know anything about an │illicit power generator.

JCDenton Actually, I'd rather hear whether you know anything about a │warehouse with an illicit generator.

JCDenton Actually, I'd rather hear whether you know anything about the │thug that goes by the name of JoJo.
JCDenton Yeah, so?

Jock I worked out there. Most people think they've got aliens from another planet, but I didn't see any flying saucers. You want to hear about it, I'll tell you -- for the price of a beer.
Jock What do you have for me?

Jock What do you have for me?

JCDenton You can have this beer.

Jock I appreciate it. Yep, I know for a fact it's not just for government research. I've seen all kinds of executives coming and going.

JCDenton I'm sure plenty of bureaucrats fly out there.

Jock Billionaires. Big executives. I think the whole place has been taken over by a private corporation.

JCDenton Not likely.

Jock Something's going on underground. I'm a pilot, which means I didn't get access to the main complex, but a lot of rock comes out of there; it's some kind of mine. But what I don't understand is why they're always laying more fiber-optic cables.

JCDenton A pilot? What do you fly?

Jock Copters. You know what I think? I think that's where the UN moved Echelon IV, back when they promised they were going to stop spying on people.

JCDenton Surveillance is a very distributed technology. To centralize it in one large facility would be very unusual -- even for the U.N.

Jock I bet they did it. They want to centralize everything -- every computer on the planet.

JCDenton Know anything that's worth the price of a beer?

Jock This old bird's had enough. Hell, I'm about to go on duty.

JCDenton What kind of chopper pilot starts work at midnight?

Jock You're with UNATCO, right?

JCDenton Why do you ask?

Jock I'm the one that flies your brother Paul to Hong Kong. He told me to watch out for you.

JCDenton I didn't know UNATCO hired pilots.

Jock The black choppers are run by the NSA to support various classified operations. The Pentagon uses them, the CIA... They hired me because I don't ask any questions.

JCDenton What was Paul's assignment in Hong Kong?

Jock Like I said, I know how to keep a secret -- even between brothers.

JCDenton So he's holding something back -- the reason UNATCO transferred him back to the states.

Jock Listen to your brother, JC. Respect his experience. Let's leave it at that.

Jock Your brother's one of the bravest men I know.

Jock Check out the girl in the leather top.

Jock One thing the Air Force never understood: I'm dependable. No matter what, I'm dependable.

Worker -- middle-aged businessman. BarWoman1 -- a female co-worker of his. She is trying to convince him that it would be okay to buy plague vaccine for his wife from a street-level drug dealer.

Worker Buy Ambrosia from a drug dealer?

BarWoman1 We're talking about your wife, the Gray Death...

Worker I don't know; if I gave it to her, and it was cut...

BarWoman1 JoJo's good for it. People know him. He'd be hanging from a streetlight if he was selling bad vaccine.

Worker Guess I have to do something...

BarWoman1 You would never forgive yourself if –

Worker I know, I know.

BarWoman1 It's to be expected. Ambrosia's a controlled substance. Most people don't even think it exists.

Worker To be paying in chits, in a grimy alley somewhere...

BarWoman1 You oughta be thankful the dealers got their hands on it. A week from now -- Listen to me; I say this for your own good: next week it might be too late.

BarWoman1 Hey, Shea. Cape Cod. Use a little vodka this time.

JordanShea Coming up.

Worker Yes?

JCDenton Tell me where you plan to get Ambrosia or I'll make sure │you're arrested on conspiracy charges.

Worker You a cop? We were just talking...

BarWoman1 Mind your own business.

JCDenton So Ambrosia's being sold on the street...

JordanShea Hey, back off, mister. Leave the customers alone.

BarWoman1 Yeah, back off.

¦JCDenton I'm serious. I want you to tell me what you know about the │stolen Ambrosia.

Worker You misheard, officer. We were talking about work.

JCDenton I heard "Ambrosia."

Worker I said you heard wrong.

The Worker changes the subject, having just been overheard talking ¦about illegally buying Ambrosia.

Worker So... the Stanley account is... concluded?

BarWoman1 More strikes, this time in Baltimore and D.C.

Worker Truckers...?

BarWoman1 Yeah, the roadblocks, security... I don't think we're going │to see any investment in transport until the political situation cools │off.

Worker Oh. I thought we had Stanley in the bag.

Worker We're just minding our own business, Officer.

JCDenton Just curious. Thought I heard you say Ambrosia.

Worker My wife has the plague.

BarWoman1 He already lost his daughter.

JCDenton I'm sorry to hear that.

Worker So do I trust some street punk called JoJo to get mepharmaceuticals? Trust him with my wife's life?

JCDenton I thought Ambrosia was an urban legend.

Worker JoJo probably just wants to sound like a player. I shouldn't get my hopes up.

JCDenton I don't know what to say. You just have to do what you think is right.

BarWoman1 I think he should do it.

JCDenton Can I ask a question?

Worker Go right ahead.

JCDenton I'm looking around for a power generator, possibly hidden, large enough to power a building.

Worker You in real estate?

JCDenton

Worker Oh-oh-oh, of course. You know, I tied in power at a place a few blocks south, a warehouse. Strangest thing. They wanted to conceal these gas-driven generators on the second floor. Didn't give a hoot if their own people got asphyxiated.

JCDenton How do I get over there?

Worker No way through the blockades now. We went over some rooftops to get there; there was a lift -- the code was 3316, I think.

JCDenton Thanks for the tip.

JCDenton Know where I can find some weapons?

Worker Weapons? Yeah, just talk to Smuggler. Guy over by the subway.

Somewhat musing rather than questioning. The player may have heard of the Smuggler before.

JCDenton Smuggler...
Worker The guy who won't open up unless you give him the password, "bloodshot." He deals in almost everything.

¦JCDenton Already met him.

¦Worker He's your man.

Worker Hey, what IS this stuff? Heavy water?

JordanShea You don't have to drink it.

Worker I also worked on their hydraulic system. If you ask me, I don't think one of those guys has seen a generator before in his life.

Worker You're a good man, Agent.

Worker Beer's my favorite financial instrument. It's true; you can TASTE an economy going sour.

Worker Crummy part of town, isn't it?

Worker I'm going to do it.

BarWoman1 I'm glad. I hope she does better.

Worker Can't be any worse for her than morphine.

BarWoman1 Hey, Shea. One for the road.

JordanShea Yes, ma'am.

These happen if the Worker was scared out of his seat by something undefined, such that the player couldn't overhear his conversation with BarWoman1. He was probably witness to violence and is a little scared.

Worker .... just letting off a little steam, I guess.

Worker I'll be glad when this thing is over.

Worker Pardon me, sir.

JoeGreene Joe Green, Midnight Sun. Glad to know you. What can you tell me about what's going on out there?

JCDenton Sorry. Regulations prevent me from talking to the press.

JoeGreene Regulations, eh? So you ARE part of the crackdown.

JCDenton Like I said, I have nothing to say.

JoeGreene Too stylish for the National Guard, too athletic for NYPD -- you must be from UNATCO.

JCDenton I really can't be bothered right now.

I fought the urge to insert a Choice in this conversation but went ahead and did it. The idea is that if JC is persistent about spilling the beans to the press (and to an MJ-12 operative at that) he will catch some heat from Manderley -- which could be a hint that Joe Green will betray him to MJ-12 later. Also, it might be cool if JC is quoted in a news story that the player finds only if he has talked to Joe Green. We'll see how much of the above pans out.

JCDenton How about I ask you a few questions?

JoeGreene Splendid. I certainly would like to know what an international antiterrorist organization expects to find in a dive like this.

┌┬JCDenton Heard anything about a secret NSF power-generator?

│└JCDenton What do you know about the NSF?

JoeGreene Aha-a-a. Playing the detective, are we? I take it you've │been assigned to eliminate certain weapons systems... defenses, maybe? │Am I getting warm?

JCDenton Just answer the question.

JCDenton On second thought, I don't need your help.

JoeGreene Then let me ask YOU a question. What do YOU think about the summary executions happening on the very streets of New York?

JCDenton I'd call it civil unrest.

JoeGreene Let me be more pointed. How does it feel to be ordered to murder civilians just because they support the fastest-growing political movement in this nation's history?

(stilted, condescending)

JCDenton In a democracy, armed rebellion is criminal, not political.

JoeGreene Rebellion, as the Declaration of Independence tells us, is not only our "right" but our "duty" when we have suffered "a long train of abuses and usurpations."

JoeGreene This is gonna make a great story.
JoeGreene Keep me updated.

JoeGreene Don't worry. I'll say "sources within UNATCO" if I quote you.

Janey Hey, you with the troops? I need help.

JCDenton What's the problem?

Janey Actually, it's my friend. Johnny took her into the alley west of here, across the street.

JCDenton Slow down. Who's Johnny?

Janey I've got a bad feeling about this. He was mad. He gets crazy when he's mad.

JCDenton Don't worry. I'll check it out.

JCDenton I was just back there. I'll go see what I can do.

JCDenton Oh, you must be Janey. I tried to buy your friend a reprieve, but instead he sold me an hour with you.

Janey You take that up with Johnny, because I quit. I'm not working for a sadistic freak like him.

Janey He took me out there once, and that's when I got cut.

Janey I hope she's okay.

Janey If Johnny touches her, I swear to God I'll kill him.

Pimp What I'm TELLIN' you, girl?

SandraRenton You said I didn't have to. Make Janey do it.

Pimp I already took the money, and when it's JoJo and it's somethin' he wants, you got to do it. You and me both, baby. We helpless.

SandraRenton We were just gonna hang out today.

Pimp I TOLD you how it don't play with me this amateur unprofessional bullshit.

SandraRenton Johnny . . .

Pimp If it's business, it's business. If it's us two hangin' out, then we hang out. Right now it's business.

SandraRenton I want out, Johnny. I didn't know it would get like this.

Pimp Put it this way. You in it. You want out it's like a gang; you get beat out.

Pimp Girl, don't make me tell you again.

SandraRenton I'm sick, Johnny. I really am. I gotta lie down.

SandraRenton Tomorrow night... Okay?
Pimp They ain't gonna be no tomorrow if there ain't a tonight.

SandraRenton You want something, talk to Johnny.

Pimp What you want?

JCDenton How much to take the lady off your hands for an hour?

Pimp Two hundred up-front and I hook you up.

│┌JCDenton I don't have that much.

││Pimp Then run on home to mama.

││

│├JCDenton Forget it.

││Pimp We ain't talkin' some rock-head Gray Death hoochie. With me ││it's always satisfaction GUARANTEED.

││JCDenton I'm not interested.

││

¦└JCDenton Deal.

Pimp Right on, bro'. You next.

JCDenton I gave you the money; now give me the girl.

Pimp I said I hook you up. Sandra's got to go underground, but you │wait topside at the Underground Bar, and I be there. Maybe you like │Janey.

JCDenton I want Sandra.

Pimp Yeah, you a Janey man. You just don't know it yet.

¦

JCDenton I want the two-hundred back.

Pimp The Underworld Bar. Thirty minutes. I hook you up.

JCDenton Leave her alone or I'll have your ass picked up for │pandering.

Pimp You ain't no po-lice. I OWN the po-lice.

(starts shooting)

¦

¦

JCDenton You've got 10 seconds to beat it before I add you to the list of NSF casualties.

Pimp Easy, bro', just havin' us a conversation.

JCDenton Five seconds.

Pimp Girl's got a head full of marbles. I HAVE to yell or she'd don't hear me.

JCDenton Three.

Pimp She schitzes on me it's my ass, man!

JCDenton One.

Pimp All right! I'm goin'. Jesus.

The Pimp just killed Sandra for not wanting to turn tricks.

Pimp Just business, bro'. Girl was schitzin' on me.

Pimp I got patience. But THAT GIRL... Thought she was a princess. Thought the world OWED her.

Pimp Everyone's gotta work. You don't work, ain't no one got a use for you.

Pimp Girl was a PARASITE.

Pimp Show's over. You better make like Kurt.

Pimp You got a problem?

Not breathy, like a damsel in distress, but appreciative.

SandraRenton Thanks.

JCDenton Sucks to get backed into a corner.

SandraRenton I was tryna find the back way into Smuggler's.

JCDenton Smuggler...?

JCDenton Right. The weapons dealer.

SandraRenton Hey, you shouldna fought Johnny. Soon as JoJo finds │out...

SandraRenton Hey, you shouldna took down Johnny. Soon as JoJo finds │out...
SandraRenton Hey, you shouldna threatened Johnny. Soon as JoJo finds
out...

JCDenton Your father asked me to look for you. He'd like you to come │home.

SandraRenton My dad shouldna hired a hit man. Stupid way to get │himself killed.

JCDenton Who's this "JoJo"?

JCDenton I've been hearing about this punk JoJo. I'll straighten him out if you can tell me where to find him.

SandraRenton You can't touch JoJo. He doesn't go out, and there's only two ways to the warehouse.

JCDenton Warehouse?

SandraRenton You think you can sneak into Osgood's at the park, but in the first place it's locked...

JCDenton The park? Where UNATCO has the NSF pinned down?

JCDenton It looks like the fighting in the park has died down.

SandraRenton... and if you go underground he's got laser tripwires, drone guns -- military-type stuff. Plus there are guards on the roof.

JCDenton Tell you what. I'll handle JoJo. You stay out of the way │until the NSF have pulled back.

JCDenton Tell you what. I'll handle JoJo. You get home so your father won't have to worry.

SandraRenton I can take care of myself.

JCDenton You mentioned a smuggler...

SandraRenton Tough guy like you? Figured you'd be a big customer.

JCDenton What's he sell? Weapons? Drugs?

SandraRenton High-priced weapons. Yeah, you should talk to him. His │place is over near the subway. You have to give the password │"bloodshot" or he won't let you in.

JCDenton You know Smuggler? What can you tell me about him?

SandraRenton Tough guy like you? Figured you'd be a big customer. His place is over by the subway. You have to give the password "bloodshot" or he won't let you in.

JCDenton That's exactly what I wanted to know.

SandraRenton Thanks already. Now leave me alone.

JCDenton Don't you have someplace to go?

SandraRenton You're looking at it.

JCDenton I think I know your father. He runs the 'Ton, right?

SandraRenton So?
JCDenton I have some bad news. He died during a shootout in the │hotel.

SandraRenton No! Your lying! You don't know my Dad!

JCDenton My brother has a room in the hotel. I'm sorry. It's true: │your father's dead.

SandraRenton Go away! Just go away!

SandraRenton I can't believe it! I just can't believe it!

SandraRenton Where were the police when all that happened? Huh? │That's what I want to know.

SandraRenton Poor Dad...

JCDenton I talked to your father. He asked me to invite you back home, no strings attached.

SandraRenton How sweet.

JCDenton You could at least let your father know you're all right.

SandraRenton He knows where I am.

JCDenton You mad at him or something?

SandraRenton Nah, but I don't want him running my life like he runs that cheap hotel.

JCDenton He doesn't do such a bad job.

SandraRenton He never got nowhere because he never took chances. That ain't me. I'm gonna do things my way.

JCDenton I think you should be more grateful for what he's done. Let's leave it at that.

(defiant)

¦SandraRenton Yeah, let's leave it at that.

JCDenton Earlier, you said something about "the Smuggler"...

Brattier than when she gives this information in a different context.

SandraRenton Huh. Tough guy like you? Figured you'd be a big │customer. He's got a basement place, over near the subway entrance. │You have to give the password "bloodshot" or he won't let you in.

SandraRenton Mind your own business.

SandraRenton I don't need you or anybody telling me what to do.

SandraRenton Somebody should take a wrecking ball to that scummy hotel.

Janey You the guy that helped Sandra?

│┌JCDenton Are you talking about the girl in the alley? I have some ││bad news. She –

┌┴JCDenton I have some bad news. Your friend in the alley -- she –

Janey Sandra! Oh my god! Is she okay?

JCDenton I did what I could.

JCDenton I think your friend is going to be all right.

Janey What about Johnny?

JCDenton I gave him a good scare.

¦(a little frightened)
¦Janey Where's he at?

¦JCDenton I don't know, but if he gives you any more trouble just tell ¦me.

¦Janey I hope he doesn't think I ratted him out.

¦

JCDenton He's on his back in the alley.

──Janey Serves him right. About time...

JCDenton What can you tell me about his boss, JoJo?

Janey Oh, JoJo. He's nothing, man. We used to go out. His body mods? Cosmetic. Scars? I saw him cut his face one time just so he'd look mean.

JCDenton Maybe I'll straighten him out as well.

JCDenton Maybe I'll cap his ass, too.

Janey Well, if you ever want to get into the warehouse where he hides out, I know the code. It's 3316.

JCDenton Thanks. You've been very helpful.

¦

JCDenton Thanks. Listen, if you see Johnny, tell him I want my two-──hundred credits back.

──Janey He robbed you?

──JCDenton I tried to buy your friend a reprieve, but he sold me an ──hour with you instead.

──Janey What's wrong with me?

──JCDenton Nothing. But I've got work to do.

Janey JoJo shouldn't stick us with guys like Johnny. That ain't cool.

Janey Sandra looks a little shaken up. I hope she's all right.

Janey I don't know why Sandra doesn't just stay with her dad. He's okay. At least she's got SOMEBODY.

ClinicFemaleBum1 I... I heard a lot of shooting outside. They told me to come in here.

ClinicFemaleBum1 All these people, they're sick. They've got the plague, don't they?

ClinicFemaleBum1 I'm staying as far away as I can. I don't wanna get sick.

ClinicFemaleBum1 I think the cops forgot about us.

In case you couldn't tell, she's crazy.

ClinicFemaleBum2 It's all ice cream and lollipops, that's what the nice man on TV said.

ClinicFemaleBum2 When the weather changes, we'll be lost and no one will know who anyone else is anymore.

ClinicFemaleBum2 By the pricking of my...my...finger, something wicked... something wicked is about to be known.

ClinicFemaleBum2 Not me... No, I didn't have anything to do with it.

ClinicMaleBum1 The riot cops are running scared.

ClinicMaleBum2 Reminds me of Washington. I was there when the NSF overran Squalnomie, back when they were called the Northwest Secessionist Forces.

ClinicMaleBum1 Were you at Squalnomie?

ClinicMaleBum2 Yeah. It was night, they came in with thermoptic camo and we never picked 'em up on any of the sensors. What a goddamned mess.

ClinicMaleBum2 Had a hard time sleeping after that. Didn't do real good on the psych evals either. Got drummed out in short order.

ClinicMaleBum1 The Army probably didn't want to have any reminders hanging around.

ClinicMaleBum2 Yeah, and now look what they got: NSF in downtown Manhattan. Same guys that nearly whupped us in the Northwest. Bet the brass remembers Squalnomie now.

ClinicMaleBum2 Christ. You see the guy begging for a cure?

ClinicMaleBum1 Yeah. What about him?

ClinicMaleBum2 It won't help. There is no cure.

ClinicMaleBum1 How do you know?

ClinicMaleBum2 They show you stuff in the military. You wanna know the real battlefield, it's microscopic. We can't even see it. Lucky for me, I got immunizations, but that guy... Well, once you're infected, you're infected.

ClinicMaleBum1 And what about me?

ClinicMaleBum2 I don't know... you got lucky. Not a bad thing to be...

ClinicMaleBum1 I wish to hell they'd give us the all-clear.

ClinicMaleBum2 You making a play today?

ClinicMaleBum1 Nah, scavenged some copper wiring, wanted to get back and try it out on the sculpture.

ClinicMaleBum2 Christ, you and the sculptures. What's this one called?

ClinicMaleBum1 "The Man Who Was Thursday."

ClinicMaleBum2 Makes as much sense as the last one. What was it called? "Napoleon" something or other?

ClinicMaleBum1 "Napoleon of Notting Hill."

ClinicMaleBum2 Doesn't seem much use for sculpture today.

ClinicMaleBum1 There's always tomorrow.

JCDenton Excuse me, you said they immunized you against the Gray Death in the military?

ClinicMaleBum2 They immunized me against a lot of stuff.

JCDenton You think it's a bioweapon?

ClinicMaleBum2 All I know is I'm well and the rest of these poor bastards are sick, and one of us got immunized, and the other ones didn't.

JCDenton Heard you say you were in Squalnomie. You're lucky. A lot of good people never made it back.

ClinicMaleBum2 Makes you feel any better, lot a not so good people didn't make it back, either.

JCDenton Yeah. Bad card to draw, no matter which side of it you were on.

ClinicMaleBum2 Look around. Some folks drew worse.

ClinicMaleBum1 Hey there. I'm Rafael, this here's Jake.

ClinicMaleBum2 Hey.

ClinicMaleBum1 Sorry? You wanted something?

ClinicMaleBum1 Look, I don't know any more than you do, friend.

ClinicMaleBum2 Sorry, I ain't got nothing for you.

ClinicMaleBum2 What? Just call me when the shooting's over.

ClinicMaleBum2 Check with one of the docs, okay?

(a Masonic passphrase)

ClinicMaleBum3 Who will help the widow's son?

JCDenton Excuse me?

ClinicMaleBum3 Oh... sorry, I thought you were someone else.

ClinicMaleBum3 The NSF are playing right into our hands...

ClinicMaleBum3 I don't hear much about it, but I know the signs. There's going to be an announcement soon.

ClinicMaleBum3 We just have to give D.C. a little push.

ClinicMaleBum3 I like to keep people guessing.

ClinicMaleBum3 I always beat around the bush. No way I would break the Oath.

JCDenton Hi, I'm in charge of law enforcement on this block. You doing all right?

ClinicOlderBum Yeah. They told me to come in here. Is that okay?

JCDenton Perfectly fine. Just making sure everyone's safe.

ClinicOlderBum Hey, while you're at it, you oughta do something about the NSF. Perfectly good shelter...

JCDenton You know what they're doing in this neighborhood?

ClinicOlderBum Kicked us outa the old Osgood place. A bunch of us camping in the tunnels. Talk about rights, but when they want something, they take it.

JCDenton Maybe I'll look into it. You take care of yourself.

ClinicOlderBum I'm not the only one they threw out.

ClinicOlderBum Think they're some kind of freedom fighters.

ClinicOlderBum Justice will be served.

ClinicOlderBum I filed a formal complaint, but the city ignored it.

This woman is sick with the Gray Death.

ClinicSickWoman Not now... Please... Leave me alone.

ClinicSickWoman Wait your turn.

Reflective, to herself.

ClinicSickWoman They said they'd call my name.

ClinicSickWoman The medbots could give me a shot in two seconds, but the doctors keep them locked up.

ClinicSickWoman Leave me be.

ClinicSickWoman No one gets to see a bot unless they pay 500 credits.

ClinicSickWoman Someone's getting rich off the Gray Death, that's for sure.

WindowBum Got a few credits?
JCDenton You have the plague?

WindowBum Nah. Cops ran us off the streets. Usually I go into the water tunnels in the warehouse district, but somebody boarded up the window.

JCDenton You live in a tunnel?

WindowBum Actually, I like to stay on the roof of this big apartment building. Nice view, if it's not too cold. There's a freight elevator at the end of the tunnel.

JCDenton Where's that window you were talking about?

WindowBum It's a basement window in the park south of the hotel.

WindowBum One thing about the warehouse district: you've got to know which buildings are safe. Some have armed guards.

(Better than sleeping on a roof.)

WindowBum I kind of like it better in here.

WindowBum Doctors don't seem to mind.

WindowBum If the cops declare martial law, maybe we can stay.

SickBum1 I want SATISFACTION!

Doctor2 We've done all that we can. It's time for you to go.

SickBum1 This is supposed to be a free clinic. Bet you'd do something if I had more money.

Doctor2 You've got the plague, sir.

SickBum1 Rich people don't get Gray Death.

Doctor2 Don't make me call security.

SickBum1 Like Mr. Billionaire Bob Page. HE don't have it. The President don't have it. I never seen a movie star who's got it. YOU don't have it!

SickBum1 I'm gonna stand here 'til I feel better.

Doctor2 Have you looked at other options? Euthanasia is one sure way to relieve suffering.

SickBum1 That Chinese herbal nonsense is for twinks. I want REAL MEDICINE.

Doctor2 I'm afraid I'm going to have to ban you from this clinic.

SickBum1 You can't do that. It's my RIGHT! You're a doctor.

SickBum1 Wait your turn.

JCDenton You should be more appreciative. By helping you, this │gentleman risks his own health.

SickBum1 But he won't give me any medicine.

Doctor2 Trust me. When there's a cure, the city will underwrite the │cost. The virus threatens everyone.

SickBum1 I don't believe you.

Doctor2 And I won't hesitate to prescribe the treatment for you.

SickBum1 You BETTER not.

Bum leaves.

¦

JCDenton He said leave. Don't make me use force.

SickBum1 This is MY doctor. We're discussing MY problems.

JCDenton The doc said you're done. Now move out.

Doctor2 Trust me. We've done all we can.\

SickBum1 I'm staying RIGHT HERE until I get SATISFACTION.

SickBum1 They say the plague came from monkeys, but that's not true. It was the Army.

SickBum1 It was the scientists. You don't see SCIENTISTS getting sick.

SickBum1 Rich people like Bob Page, who own all the technology -- THEY don't get sick.

SickBum1 No one tells me what to do.

Very surly. He's waiting to be given a vaccine he thinks the doctor is hiding.

SickBum1 I ain’t budging

These barks happen only if something screwy happened -- the player didn't listen to the overheard conversation, or there was violence in the area and the NPCs scattered. This guy might be somewhat scared.

SickBum1 I'm gonna stand my ground.

SickBum1 What's your problem, man!

SickBum1 No one tells me what to do.

I’m picturing this guy as being drunk.

SickBum2 Vectors... The vectors are all wrong.

SickBum2 I was in the biochem department at the college... I know what I'm talking about!

SickBum2 It's not a class disease, not just poor people... it's HYGIENE! That's where it starts.

SickBum2 I don't think it's contagious at all.

SickBum2 I think terrorists put the Gray Death in the water.

SmugglerDoorBell Password?

JCDenton Open up. I'm a federal agent.

More forceful. The player has been denied entry before.

¦JCDenton Open up.

│┌ (sound of Smuggler hanging up the line)

¦│SmugglerDoorBell (Click)

││Smuggler might cough during this

│├SmugglerDoorBell ... too sick Come back later.

│└SmugglerDoorBell The buzzer doesn't seem to be working.

JCDenton Bloodshot.

(Door opens.)

AlexJacobson Watch it, JC. Our agents report that this area is booby-│trapped. And the latest news: your brother's team hit some │resistance, so they're going to be delayed a little while we bring in │chopper support.

AlexJacobson Our files show that the Smuggler is whacked-out paranoid. Watch for booby traps. And the latest news: your brother's team hit some resistance, so they're going to be delayed while we bring in chopper support.

JC has just defeated the Smuggler's security system. The Smuggler is angry and a little scared. I'm not transliterating his accent, but maybe he has kind of a blue-caller New York twang in his voice.

Smuggler What do you want?

JCDenton Why the booby traps? Afraid of something?

Smuggler Just precautions.

JCDenton I got your friend out of the underground lab.

│Smuggler Ford? He's alive?

JCDenton He's doing fine. Who were those troops? They didn't look │like NSF.

│Smuggler They must be CIA, or maybe Freemasons.

JCDenton You in the black market? Is that why they call you Smuggler?

│Smuggler You need something?

JCDenton Depends on what you have.

│Smuggler Since you helped Ford, I'll cut you a deal. I'll give you a │scope that will fit most handguns and rifles for 700 credits, a │bioelectric cell for 250, or some Light Amplification Goggles for │1125.

JCDenton Against what?

Smuggler Government's been having some kind of crackdown all year. People I know, they've been disappearing.

(skeptical)

JCDenton Is that so?

Smuggler Think it's a big joke? Lift up a grate in the street. They've got my friend Ford Schick in a secret lab next to the sewers.

JCDenton The sewers... Yeah, I found your friend. They had him ¦doing research.

¦Smuggler Ford? Is he all right?

¦JCDenton I tried to break him out, but he died.

¦Smuggler Dead? Ford's dead?

¦JCDenton I'm sorry. I wish I had better news.

¦

JCDenton A lab... In the sewers? Maybe he was taken hostage by the ││NSF.

││Smuggler These guys are pros, definitely government-funded.

││JCDenton Interesting. Maybe I'll take a look, but I think you should ││have a little more regard for the United States government.

││Smuggler If you're serious about going down there and finding Ford, ││I'll give you a deal on some hardware. Also you'll need this. It's ││the key that can open the sewer manholes.

││JCDenton Tell me about the hardware.

││Smuggler I have a scope that will fit most handguns and rifles for ││2200 credits, a bioelectric cell for 800, and some Light ││Amplification Goggles for 3500.

The Smuggler is waiting for the player to rescue his friend Ford Schick.

Smuggler Ford does the best bioscience in the Northeast.

Smuggler They'll keep him alive as long as he's useful. Not a minute more.

Smuggler It's ironic. Just before they got him, Ford told me he had proof that the CIA does experiments on street people.

AlexJacobson These tunnels aren't on the New York City sewer maps -- weird. I have no information on what you might be getting into. This seems worth following up.

AlexJacobson This area is an old water treatment facility. I wonder what all of these para miltary types are doing down here, but considering what the Smuggler said, I would imagine this is where they are holding his friend, Ford Schick.

FordSchick Don't kill me!

JCDenton Tell me what's going on here. What's this facility for?

FordSchick They kidnapped me. The antibodies... I was ordered to │knock out certain sequences.

JCDenton Who kidnapped you? I don't recognize the uniforms of the │soldiers.

FordSchick Hey, can you get me out of here? I'm friends with │Smuggler. He'd probably give you a reward.

FordSchick I think the troops are security for some sort of biotech │company. I don't have anything to do with it. I said I wouldn't │experiment on people, but they just do the transfusions themselves.

JCDenton They're pretty well-armed for corporate security.

JCDenton You must be Ford Schick.

FordSchick Who are you?

JCDenton Smuggler sent me. Who's holding you here? I don't recognize the uniforms of the soldiers.

FordSchick I don't know. They're private security for a biotech company or something. They have me doing antibody work.

JCDenton Corporate security isn't usually outfitted to fight a ground-war.

FordSchick They're doing experiments on people. They don't want anybody finding out.

JCDenton Make a break for it. I'll protect you.

FordSchick Here I go!

JCDenton Wait here while I deal with security.

FordSchick Tell me when the coast is clear.

FordSchick Which way?

FordSchick Watch out for guards.

FordSchick Let's get out of here.

These are Ford Schick's barks both during and after the escape. FordSchick They had me working on immunoglobulin encodings.

FordSchick The soldiers kidnap homeless people and inject them with Gray Death.

FordSchick I was supposed to genetically alter those poor people so that they could tolerate the virus.

FordSchick Every time I got the sequence wrong, more people died.

FordSchick The soldiers seemed less interested in curing the plague than in successfully integrating it into a human host.

FordSchick I could eliminate the immune response by removing all sequences that code for H type epsilon, but that's like driving a nail with a wrecking ball.

FordSchick I knew that patients without epsilon chains would die, but it was the only way to narrow down the problem.

FordSchick I had no choice. One of the guys knew enough immunology that I couldn't fake it.

FordSchick I can make it from here. Thanks. If you see Smuggler, tell him I'm all right.

JCDenton I have some bad news.

Smuggler Did you find Ford?

JCDenton He's dead. I tried to get him out, but...
Smuggler Dead?

JCDenton I did what I could.

Smuggler I... can't believe it.

JCDenton I got your friend out.

Smuggler Ford? Is he all right?

JCDenton Fine. You were right about those troops. Definitely not NSF.

Smuggler They're the CIA. They capture people and use them for medical experiments.

A change of subject between the sentences. The first one is dismissive, almost muttered under his breath.

JCDenton I wouldn't go that far. You said you'd make it worth my while...?

Smuggler I'll cut you a deal on that hardware. You pay one-third of ¦what I told you before.

Smuggler I would have cut you a deal on that hardware, but you ──cleaned me out. Sorry.

JCDenton Let's see the hardware again.

Smuggler See anything you like?

JCDenton Too expensive. Maybe I'll try to locate your friend.

JCDenton I'll give you 2100 for the scope.

│┌┤JCDenton How about you give me the bioelectric cell for 750?

││└JCDenton Sell me the Light Amplification Goggles for 3375.

├┤

││┌JCDenton I'll take the scope for 700.

│└┤JCDenton Here's 250 for the bioelectric cell.

JCDenton 1125 for Light Amplification Goggles? Sure.

Smuggler Deal.

JCDenton 700's a bargain on that scope, but I'm low on cash.

│┌┤JCDenton I'd take the bioelectric cell for 250 if I had the cash.

││└JCDenton 1125 for Light Amplification Goggles sounds fair, but I ││don't have the money.
├┤

││┌JCDenton I'd offer 2100 for the scope, but I'm low on cash.

│└┤JCDenton I'd give you 750 for the bioelectric cell if I wasn't │¦broke.

JCDenton If I had 3375, I'd make an offer on the Light Amplification │──Goggles.

JCDenton I'm not Bob Page, you know.

¦Smuggler Come back when you have the money.

¦

Smuggler I would consider it.

Smuggler I could come down a bit.

JCDenton Not interested.

Smuggler You'll have to drop something if you want to carry that.

Smuggler I don't have anything left to sell.

The player has just failed to rescue Smuggler's friend Ford Schick. Ford is dead.

Smuggler Go away.

Smuggler I don't feel like making deals.

Smuggler I wish I'd never said anything; maybe he'd be alive right now.

JCDenton See you later.

┌Smuggler Hey, and thanks again for finding Ford.

JCDenton No problem.

Smuggler Well, you know where to find me. Thanks again for finding Ford.

Smuggler If you come back, you can use the front door. The password's "bloodshot."

UNATCOHotel What's your business here, Agent?

JCDenton Just going up to my brother's room.

UNATCOHotel You better hold off. The NSF retreated in there about half an hour ago, and they've taken hostages. We're waiting on a specialist.

JCDenton I'm your specialist. Just tell me where the hostages are being held.

UNATCOHotel No one's standing in your way, but you'll have to go in alone. Our orders are to hold the perimeter. We think the terrorists are on the second floor.
JCDenton Carry on, Corporal.

UNATCOHotel Agent.

UNATCOHotel Don't take any unnecessary risks.

UNATCOHotel Remember: no deals with terrorists.

UNATCOHotel Good luck, Agent.

During this scene, Gilbert is being held at gunpoint by terrorists behind the hotel desk. He's nervous and unable to obey JC's order to leave the building. JC can't see the terrorists.

JCDenton You better get out of here, Mr. Renton. We have a situation │with the NSF outside.

JCDenton You better get out of here, Mr. Renton. Terrorists have taken cover inside the hotel.

GilbertRenton Ah... Can't leave the desk unintended.

JCDenton You'll be caught in the crossfire. I have to order you to leave the building.

GilbertRenton Yes, of course. I'll close up in a second.

During these barks, Gilbert is being held at gunpoint by terrorists behind the hotel desk. He's nervous and unable to obey JC's order to leave the building. JC can't see the terrorists.

GilbertRenton I'll head out-- just a minute.

This might be a disguised call for help. He's afraid the player might pass him by without noticing the terrorist.

GilbertRenton Hey, thanks for the concern!

GilbertRenton Good to see you, Mr. Denton!

JCDenton You all right, Mr. Renton?

GilbertRenton Fine. I think that's all of them. You got the guys │upstairs, right?

│┌JCDenton Yeah. How's your daughter? Is she somewhere safe?

││GilbertRenton I don't know -- she's been gone all week. I try not to ││think about it.

││JCDenton Tonight's a bad night to be on the streets. I'll take a ││look around.

││GilbertRenton Hey, if you see Sandra, tell her I don't care. I don't ││care what she's been doing; she can come home, no questions, no ││speeches.

││

│└JCDenton Yeah. By the way, I saw your daughter down the street. She │didn't look so good.

GilbertRenton Sandra? Was she coming back to the hotel?

JCDenton I took care of a thug who was harassing her, but she's │¦still mixed up in some pretty nasty business. You better talk to │¦her.

JCDenton I ran off a thug who was harassing her, but she's still │mixed up in some pretty nasty business. You better talk to her.

GilbertRenton No, no more talking. If you see her, tell her I don't │care what she's been doing; she can come home, no questions, no │speeches.

JCDenton I'll tell her she can trust you.

GilbertRenton Fine. Be careful, though. They've got more hostages up on the second floor.

JCDenton I'll check it out. How's your daughter? Is she somewhere ¦safe?__"

¦GilbertRenton I don't know -- she's been gone all week. I try not to ¦think about it.

JCDenton I'll check it out. By the way, I saw your daughter down the ──street. She didn't look so good.

──GilbertRenton Sandra? Was she coming back to the hotel?

── JCDenton I took care of a thug who was harassing her, but she's ──¦still mixed up in some pretty nasty business. You better talk to ──¦her.

──GilbertRenton I think that's all of them. You got the guys upstairs?

──JCDenton Yeah. You can have your hotel back.

──GilbertRenton The hotel, good. Now we just have to kick these punks ──out of Manhattan.

──JCDenton My brother Paul's heading up the operation. The NSF won't ──have New York for long.

A burst of excitement fading to despair as he considers the dangers of confronting his daughter, the chance that she will just get more angry at his interference.

GilbertRenton I should probably go find her. Oh, I don't know.

GilbertRenton Maybe she'll come in from the fighting.

GilbertRenton Why's she have to do this to me?

GilbertRenton They think they're invincible at that age.

GilbertRenton Thanks. I thought I was a goner.

GilbertRenton Sandra's pretty headstrong sometimes.

GilbertRenton I offered her a job that the desk. You can imagine what she said to that.

GilbertRenton If the economy hadn't bottomed out, she might have got along all right, but at 18... She just doesn't stand much of a chance.

GilbertRenton If you see her... Well, never mind. I just hope she's all right.

GilbertRenton Thanks for looking out for her.

GilbertRenton There are two of those guys. I knew they were NSF from the body-armor.

GilbertRenton They're scared. That's why they took hostages.

GilbertRenton Maybe we should just keep out of the way until this blows over.

GilbertRenton I'm not getting involved.

This guy talks in a quiet voice. He is a prisoner of terrorists, who are nearby.

MaleHostage Watch out. They've got guns.
MaleHostage You better get out of here.

MaleHostage They'll kill me if I try to leave.

MaleHostage Thanks for taking care of those guys. You from the police?

JCDenton UNATCO.

MaleHostage Yeah? Well, you might be interested. I heard them talking. They said something about how they had just put in a generator in a warehouse a few streets south of here.

JCDenton Did you catch the name of the street?

MaleHostage No, but they were talking about their security setup.

JCDenton

MaleHostage It sounded like there was underground access; they're using the word "righteous" as some kind of password.

JCDenton That's very helpful. Thanks.

MaleHostage You just about saved my life.

MaleHostage I'm gonna wait here until things settle down.

JCDenton There were a couple of NSF on the second floor. I took care of the situation.

UNATCOHotel What about the hostages?

JCDenton Doing fine. You guys can relax.

UNATCOHotel Guess we didn't need that specialist after all.

└┬JCDenton Dead. But I played by the book: no deals with terrorists.

JCDenton Not all of them made it. But I played by the book: no deals ──with terrorists.

UNATCOHotel You should've waited for the specialist.

UNATCOHotel At least it's over.

UNATCOHotel Well, I'm glad they made it.

UNATCOHotel We'll take it from here.

UNATCOHotel Good work, Agent.

BystanderBum DO something, man. They're gonna kill him.

In these barks, the bystander yells something at two thugs who are mugging a mole person. At random, one of the thugs might respond with a short retort.

(The following sounds like a dare.)

BystanderBum I know the cops in this town.

BystanderBum Pretty sorry, man, mugging a mole person.

AlleyThug You're next.

BystanderBum Crawl back in your hole.

AlleyBum What'd I do?

AlleyBum I got NOTHIN', all right. Leave me alone!

AlleyBum I ain't backing down. No, sir.

AlleyThug Back off, pretty boy.

Thugs about to beat up "AlleyBum."

AlleyThug Ain't no law tonight. Ain't no reason I don't kill you right now.

AlleyThug Nothing. I checked his pockets.

AlleyThug You don't live underground and not have one of Charlie's cards. Make him take off his shoes.

AlleyBum I just sleep down there. They don't give you money unless you're on the Council.

AlleyThug Take off your shoes.

AlleyThug Charlie has no reason to be stingy if he has a currency-encoder.

AlleyBum They just hacked a few accounts. They have some extra cash. That's it.

AlleyThug I'm not asking again.

AlleyBum It's just a bunch of us... We go down there to get out of the cold.

AlleyThug All right. We'll do it the hard way.

This guy's friend just got killed.

BystanderBum He's dead... My God, he's dead!

BystanderBum I can't believe it...

BystanderBum He never hurt nobody...

BystanderBum Next manhole I see I'm going underground and I'm not coming up.

BystanderBum They gonna burn this city down for a few credits?

BystanderBum Some people think the fighting's all a big game.

The AlleyBum is kind of whining throughout this.

AlleyBum Did you SEE that?

JCDenton Yes, I –

AlleyBum That was UNCALLED for. You mug people, great, you need the dough, but you SHOW some RESPECT.

JCDenton What were they after?

AlleyBum Especially when it's your ALLY. THEY came to us. THEY wanted an underground base.

JCDenton So those guys were... NSF?
AlleyBum Yeah, the NSF gives guns to anybody who wants to fight. A lot of people just take the guns and do what they want.

JCDenton So the terrorists are based... in the subways? The sewers?

AlleyBum They need to move some kind of secret equipment. Our tunnels are like the crossroads.

JCDenton Tell me how to find this base and l bet I can get the NSF off your back.

AlleyBum "Underworld." Just remember that word when you see Curly. He lets people in.

AlleyBum Me, personally, I don't rob. I think it's wrong.

AlleyBum I think Curly went underground, but remember that password. You might need it someday.

AlleyBum Appreciate the help.

AlleyBum The NSF are all right. It's just some of the people that hang around 'em, you know?

AlexJacobson Good job, JC. The power just died at the NSF headquarters. Now it's up to Paul. Go to the roof. A chopper is arriving with Agent Hermann on board. He will lock down the warehouse while you take the chopper back to HQ.

GuntherHermann Manderley has assigned me the peacekeeping occupation of this district.

JCDenton I took care of the generator. How's the raid going?

GuntherHermann They should have sent Agent Navarre. Your brother is timid like a child.

JCDenton Did something go wrong?

GuntherHermann You do not need to hear anything from me. Take the helicopter back to base. I am sure Manderley has planned a debriefing for the top agents.

GuntherHermann I do not need assistance.
GuntherHermann The helicopter is waiting.

GuntherHermann Learn your lesson from Paul.

GuntherHermann A simple job. They have me doing the work of bots.

GuntherHermann You will be bored if you stay here with me.
