The trumps can be divided vertically into the left and right pillers (figure b) and horizontally into moon, sun and star realms (figure c). The surface of the earth (superficial reality) is at the top of these diagrams, and the universal powers (underlying reality) is at the bottom. In the underworld, the most powerful forces are the deepest ones. Our surface reality is the manifestation of underworld events and energies. The local nature of the trumps in the City-Wood deck therefore becomes less evident as you move down the tree towards more universal powers.
The general pattern
is that an individual journeys into the depths, is changed in some way,
and returns to the surface to reveal a new form (figure d).
