Trump overview

Trumps in underworld tarot
The Major Arcana of traditional tarot are based on the Qabalist Tree of Life above while the City-Wood deck, following the model of R. J. Stewart's Dreampower deck, uses the the inverted Tree below (figure a).

The trumps can be divided vertically into the left and right pillers (figure b) and horizontally into moon, sun and star realms (figure c). The surface of the earth (superficial reality) is at the top of these diagrams, and the universal powers (underlying reality) is at the bottom. In the underworld, the most powerful forces are the deepest ones. Our surface reality is the manifestation of underworld events and energies. The local nature of the trumps in the City-Wood deck therefore becomes less evident as you move down the tree towards more universal powers.

The general pattern is that an individual journeys into the depths, is changed in some way, and returns to the surface to reveal a new form (figure d).

Trump numbering
Trumps are numbered according to their position on the tree.
The trumps represent the paths between spheres.
Trumps form various patterns, such as pairs (1 and 2, 3 and 4 etc - this system has been used to organise the menu of detailed trump descriptions).
