About the Inspection |
The purpose of the inspection is to assure government, parents and the public of the quality and standard of childminding. When making judgements, inspectors have regard to how well the provider meets the National Standards for under Eights Day Care and Childminding. The report identifies strengths and areas for improvement. |

Information about the setting |
The childminder has been registered since 2002. She is registered to provide care for four children under the age of eight years, of these, not more than two may be under five, and of these, not more than one may be under one year. At present the childminder cares for seven children, all are part time. The childminder lives with her husband and two young children. They live in a house in the Itchen area of Southampton, close to local amenities. All areas of the property are used for childminding. There is a fully enclosed garden available for outside play. It is a non-smoking household. The family have one cat and a hamster. The childminder attends the local care and toddler group on a regular basis. She is a member of the Southampton Childminding Association, and is in the process of becoming accredited to the local childmindng network. |

How good is the childminding? |
The childminder provides good quality care for the children. She offers a warm and welciming environment, where children feel settled and relaxed. She makes good use of the space provided for childminding. She encourages positive behaviour by being consistent and giving plenty of praise and encouragement to the children, helping each child to develop a good understanding of right from wrong. She is aware of safety issues inside and out, and ensures the maximum safety of the children.
The childminder offers a wide range of toys and equipment, promoting care, learning and play, most of which the children are able to access themselves. She plans exciting activities both inside and outside the home. She promotes good hygiene practices related to her work with children. he offers a varied and healthy diet, and is aware of the dietary preferences of children.
The childminder has a good relationship with the parents, and keeps then fully informed of their child's activites. All the relevant paperwork and most of the documentation is in place, and is updated regularly. |

CONDITIONS OF REGISTRATION |
All registered persons must comply with all conditions of registration included on his/her certificate of registration. As a result of this inspection conditions of registration have been imposed / varied / removed and a new certificate of registration will be issued. |

The Childminder should have regard to the following recommendations by the time of the next inspection. |
Standard 2 - Recommendation - Implement the use of a daily record of attendance, including arrival and departure times. Standard 12 - Recommendation - Implement a complaints procedure which is made available to parents. Standard 14 - Recommendation - Record issues to problem behaviour, incoming accidents and child protection issues in an incident book (standard 7, 11 & 13). |
