#Class Project Guidelines

Purpose

The #Class project was initially created to familarize new users with Internet Relay Chat and the Palchat. It has since provided users with a terrific method to receive information on basic IRC commands as well as demonstrate the many features and resources of the Palchat. We believe that educating new users with the basics help them find their way around the network, thereby making chat on IRC a more enjoyable experience for all.

Procedures

#Class sessions are held every Friday at 19:30 Eastern (Friday at 23:30 GMT) and every Sunday at 11:30 Eastern (Sunday at 15:30 GMT). Each session is presided over by the teacher, whose responsibility it is to play the #Class script and watch over the session by kicking users who change their nicknames.
Tutors e-mail the class@representative.com list prior to the session and volunteer to tutor. We usually try to have three or four tutors per class.

All #Class staff members who have indicated their availability usually gather in the tutor meeting room at least 20 minutes prior so we can discuss that day's class. At that point, tutor assignments are given out by the teacher. Tutors are assigned alphabetic nicknames and assist users whose nicknames begin with those assigned letters. After the global announcement is given at 7:25 pm and people have had a chance to enter the channel and settle in, the teacher will moderate and lock the room by setting it to invite-only mode to help avoid disruption. Tutors are ops in the channel along with the teacher.

When the session begins, the teacher plays the script to the #Class channel. At specified break times, the users can communicate with their assigned tutor via the /msg (message) command. Also, if a user should get disconnected for some reason, then they can message their tutor for an invite back. Tutors receive messages from students in the class with questions or comments, and the tutor will then reply with an answer. If the tutor does not know the answer to a specific question, they usually ask publicly in the meeting room, and someone who does know the answer will reply.

Nickname changes are discouraged during class, and users are kicked and banned if this happens. If a netsplit occurs, usually the script is stopped, and a delay of a reasonable amount of time is allowed for students to rejoin. If it is a fairly large netsplit, the channel will be taken off invite-only mode.

When the script is concluded, the teacher will take the channel off invite-only and moderated mode, and users can comment on the session or ask questions of the tutors. Logs of the class are always available by e-mailing class@representative.com.
