PRIESTHOOD

At one time in the Catholic Church, young men and boys were encouraged to consider entering junior and senior seminaries, where future Priests are trained, straight from school. Today, that is no longer the case.

Most young Priests in training have been previously employed. They are likely to be in their 20's, 30's or 40's.

This means that they have already some experience of encountering people in their adult lives. The result of this change means that newly ordained Priests have a more mature outlook on life. Unfortunately, it has led to a reduction in the numbers coming forward for training.

So why are there fewer applicants today?

A survey carried out in Glasgow, among young people aged between 17 and 25, showed that they are unwilling today to commit themselves to anything for life. A change of employment, or even career, is commonplace.

Contrary to popular belief, this survey indicated that the question of celibacy is not a hindrance to a vocation.
