SALVAGE MEETING TO DISCUSS ‘IEVOLI SUN’ HELD IN PARIS

A representative from the Maritime & Coastguard Agency attended a meeting in Paris on 21 December 2000 to discuss with both with the Channel Island and French authorities future salvage options for `Ievoli Sun’, which sank off the coast of Alderney in the Channel Islands on the 2nd November.

Further surveillance flights are continuing over the site of the wreck and its cargo whilst atmospheric monitoring continues on Alderney. There has been no detection of the styrene or methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) that was carried on board the vessel during the monitoring which has now been scaled down.

There has been initial agreement by the third party insurers in co-operation with owners of the vessel, that during any subsequent salvage operations that at minimum the intermediate fuel oil and styrene will be removed from the vessel. No salvors have yet been appointed and a further meeting is scheduled to take place of the 4th January to examine further options for salvage.

A date of April 7th has been set by the French and British authorities for completion of the work in order not to disrupt both commercial traffic and tourism to the Islands.
