EMERGENCY SIGNAL DETECTED BY COASTGUARD

Falmouth Coastguards have picked up an emergency signal from Pete Goss’s abandoned catamaran Team Philips.

The first signal was detected at about midnight yesterday and was followed by further signals at regular intervals. The signal goes off when a safety beacon comes into contact with water and indicated that the vessel was in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, about 1,000 miles off the British coast.

A coastguard spokesman said: "Before Pete Goss left, they stashed it (the signal) down below in a waterproof bag, so the water must have got to it. It may be with what's left of the boat or it may have floated off."

Vicky Williams, spokeswoman for Goss Challenges, said: "It is too early to say (what we will do), we just don't know why it has gone off, and we can't just rush off into the Atlantic. We will just see what happens.
