TITANIC APRIL FOOL JOKE BACKFIRED

Southern FM had said a full-size replica of the Titanic would sail along the Sussex coast, but had to apologise to listeners after their April Fool joke backfired on them.

Hundreds of people went to Beachy Head hoping to spot the vessel, but after a 5ft crack developed in the cliff face, coastguards turned them away and closed the area.

Coastguards said the crack posed a real danger to the public while the Brighton-based radio station said it had all been a bit of fun.

The public is also reported to have strayed on to parkland that was closed due to the foot-and-mouth outbreak.

Coastguard News’ April Fool spoof caused no such danger and passed by without a remark. We’ll have to try better next year.
